Book Recommendation: Kevin Hearne's Iron Druid Chronicles

Hey everyone, I really hope this is the right place to put something like this.  It seemed lonely in here, haha.

Anyways I have a book recommendation for everyone.  It's called The Iron Druid Chronicles by Kevin Hearne.  The genre is Urban Fantasy.  It's modern day, on Earth, but with fantasy elements.

Atticus O'Sullivan, or Siodhachan O Suileabhain, as he's truly named, is the very last of the Druids, narrowly surviving the Roman Empire's crusade to stamp out all Druids everywhere.  He appears in his early twenties, but in reality he is older than Christianity, born in the Iron Age.  Atticus is still on the run, pursued by one of the Tuatha De Danann, Aenghus Og, after stealing his fey sword in battle, Fraggarach, The Answerer.

Moving from place to place to avoid conflict with Aenghus Og, he eventually ends up in Tempe, Arizona, under the name Atticus.  He owns Third Eye Books and Herbs.  During his advneutres with his Irish Wolfhound, Oberon, with whom he can communicate telepathically (and is hilarious), he has several encounters with many of the Tuatha De Danann, covens of witches, vampires, werewolves, choosers of the slain, skinwalkers, elementals, and gods of various pantheons.

It's a great series, the magic system is well though-out and it has the boundries it needs to feel interesting and still present challenges for the main character, and indeed he IS NOT invulnerable... only to aging due to his knowledge of a set of herblore that let's him brew Immortalitea, as he calls it.  It's very interesting to read a first person perspective of someone over 2000 years old.  I'd recommend it to everyone.  Just finished my second reread.  Enjoyed it even more. :)  Also check out Dresden Files, Wheel of Time, Stormlight Chronicles, and/or Mistborn if you're looking for something to read. :)

My wife and I enjoy listening to audiobooks. My favorites are urban fantasy, such as "The Dresden Files". We stumbled upon the "Iron Druid" series recently. They are quite entertaining and you've described the world Hearne created very well. Parents should understand that these are not kids books. This series has done very well as an audiobook, and all are among the top selllers in the genre on Audible. The narrator does a tremendous job, even with the Celtic pronouciations. The production value on the audiobooks is very good, you can tell there was real effort there....and that's something that is often lacking. And of course, you've just got to love his dog, an Irish Wolfhound named Oberon. The books are worth it just to hear Oberon's conversations with Atticus.

Oh yeah forgot theyre not exactly aimed at the Harry Potter demographic. Definitely not for kids, hahaha. Yeah I also listened to the audiobooks for them. Luke Daniels is amazing. His voice for Oberon is just perfect haha. Exactly how you would expect a telepathic wolfhound to sound lol. Dresden Files was also pretty awesome. I just greatly disliked the ending and just cant get over the change of narrator for the last book. I dunno.

I have to agree with this post. I read the books fairly recently and I loved them! And, since I am a re-reader, I will be reading them again. All the characters have a history which just adds to the overall story. It's a wonderful series.

It does. But not so much early on. I don't want to spoil too much but there's a potential love interest thing developing. And he has some other encounters during the series. There's a strong female character that starts developing in book 2. Won't spoil it. :D

Amagad. Have you read Wheel of Time? Its like... seriously a world. It has as much history as the real planet earth lol. I love to blab about Wheel of Time, lol. Ive read every book at least 5 times, because theres still new nuances to discover every time. Starting another reread now Im done with Iron Druid haha. The last book comes out in January. Thats book 15 and theres also a prequel. Crazy awesome.

Read all of his books to date. Fun series. Looking forward to more. Learn some Celtic mythology along the way.

Such a great series! A couple more that I've been reading lately are the Matthew Swift series by Kate Griffin (about a British sorcerer) and The Death Works series by Trent Jamieson. The Death Works series has some fun one liners similar to the Iron Druid books and has a bit of romance in it as well. I'm definitely up for a book club!
