Questions to Crafters (Hit inventory wall)

So I'm posting here some questions I have. (Not all related) but hopefully I'll find answers.

This weekend after Crow's Nest I hit inventory wall (All banks and backpacks full), this made me Sad and Frustrated with the MMO in general.

There's a group that I play these games with who aren't in the Guild and they are old Vets of Many MMO games and they sympathized and discussed Mule/Bank Characters

So while I did come to a process to help me deal with this very Unheroic issue of inventory management. (Farming for anything also seems unheroic fantasy) Going to the Guild Bank and Shop and Marketplace has me wondering if I may be wasting time.

First the Process for inventory management. (so I don't fume)

I have 2 characters that hold stuff

Char 1 (a character I actually made to play with) Holds Enchanting, Provisioning and Alchemy Items

Char 2 (xxMulexx sorry if I took your name) Holds Wood, Cloth, Smithing and theme and trait items

The characters I play with dump anything they find that falls under that list into the account Bank

When these characters can no longer take things out of the bank I get to crafting.

Next are a bunch of questions:

1. Is dumping things that I create in the Guild Bank/ Store contribute to anything in the guild? (My son gets excited about contributing and insists that we put things we make in the Guild Bank) The marketplace seems to only have crafting requests? can I just put something in the marketplace. My smith is starting to do impressive things (with enchantments even). (I do understand filling craft orders mostly I'm just asking if I find myself with tons of potions and glyphs that are just taking up space.) I would like to contribute but don't want to throw them in a void. (I have some awesome health+stamina potions and weapon crit+stamina potions, invis potions)

2. Should I deconstruct everything? Does this have any use as far as leveling? It's hard to keep track of the traits I haven't researched. And sadly saving items seems another issue for inventory management.

3. Does crafting take that much away from fighting "at tier (same or similar)" monsters.

  • My 'to be' Gaiscioch main character has Blacksmithing and Enchanting. Is that too skill point heavy to keep up with battles at level? (Should I scour the world for Skyshards?)
  • The over the shoulder character my son has (who also is made to particpate with the group I guess) Wants to (loves to I should say) craft food, cloth, alchemy and wood (skills have been put into the first three but not the last) solo questing for him seems pretty much out of the question and expensive for all the dying that goes on.

4. I clearly have a hoarding problem (mostly b/c I'm surprised that deconstructing seems to lend little to advancement.) best ideas on stepping away from Hoarding.

5. I guess having a crafting partner for Wood Cloth and Smithing is super awesome (something about inspiration). Anybody willing to partner with me?

Ok that's it. These will settle current issues. Making things for friends and the guild is immensely satisfying.

Yes, I've found "Inventory Management" to be a mini-game of this MMO, but i've always "suffered" from this regardless of what MMO i play cause like you I suffer from hoarding habits and also a bit of Kleptomania as far as gathering goes. Heaven help me if I pass up a log of wood even though i'm not leveling woodworking :P

You have the right idea for the mule character. I have one created for all provisioning mats and use available bank slots to cycle items between them and my main character. I'm leveling alchemy as well and it took me a while to realize that keeping all flowers on me helps save "overal inventory" slots as you're constantly finding all kinds of herbs in your adventures.

Concerning contributions, for raw mats I've found other guildies that are leveling professions and send those items their way, including green and white items when i'm in a bind for inventory space. There's always the marketplace for raw mats. As far as crafted items, I haven't seen any system for requesting them other than one-on-one interactions in guild chat. Personally I'm not high enough on BS traits to advertise in guild chat let alone in zone chat. Concerning consumables, I imagine at low level 1-20 all consumables won't offer that much of a bonus and quests rewards haven't left me wanting too much. I'm BS/Alch and i sell more potions than i actually use and only craft 20% of my armor/weapons.

I imagine later in the game (concerning levels) crafted items will increase in longevity and thus be more desirable, but those first 20 levels go by so quick most don't bother searching for someone to craft some gear.

I've had to adapt to the situation.  Based on what is provided to us; I found it difficult to try and manage more than 3 crafts.  I have some mules set up but found I was getting resentful of the fuss of logging on .. . loggin off . ..   I even kept a spreadsheet!

Here's is what kept my sanity:

1) Trust that you will have what you need when you need it and don't try to craft everything. When low level, the whites I made were enough to quest in.  In time, you start getting greens . ..  then blues.  A bit haphazard and not my usual style .. .  but I found I had no problem questing.  I struggled . . . and still do . ..  but came to realize that while it was possible to do all 5 with the help of mules; I was starting to fume about inventory space and the time spent logging onto mules.  I usually get more than enough glyphs, potions and food drops - if not, if I actually spend time questing, doing dungeons and shopping in the guild shop I can find all I need.  The armor/weps I'm more particular about - so this is where I chose to put my time and inventory space.

2) I have one mule that basically holds my maps and pets and an extra stack each of raw mats like jute, rawhide and ore for any low level crafting I may need to do later.  I take time off from crafting and do a lot of questing and dungeons (tons of drops).  I found I could buy more slots as I had lots of loot to sell (and deconstruct).  I have 90 bank slots now and I think 70 bag slots.  I have plenty room to hold my clothier/blacksmith/woodworking raw mats, upgrades and all the racial/weapon/armor stones . . .  and still have room.

3) I don't try to have a large inventory of raw mats. (was hard to give up that security blanket!  LOL)  I make outfits/weps as I level and craft items with my looted trait stones and gathered mats and sell them to the NPC vendors for pure profit and at the same time also level the craft. In 20 minutes on 2 crafts I made a 1000 gold and both crafts went up a level and a half.   I have my crafter carry in her bags no more than 4 items of the most desireable traits I want to research and then sell/deconstruct the rest.  Trust that you will find what you need later.  May be slower progress in researching; but I'd rather slow the pace then rob from my enjoyment of the game.

Everyone is different; but this worked for me.  In other games I stockpiled supplies and did every craft.  In ESO, I could only do this if I was willing to sacrifice game time to keeping spreadsheets and spending hours of time managing 4 mules.  I realised that the inventory management was making me angry and robbing my play time so I decided to walk down a different path.

By deconstructing often, and by utilizing a mix of bag and bank space, along with a pack horse, I haven't run into issues (note, pack horse not a great idea unless you have imperial edition.)

This is with doing every craft in the game on my own at the same time.  One thing of note is that I limited my provisioning items to a few for any level set, making only certain recipes.

In general, you may want to make one or two characters and upgrade their bags to hold items, rather than bank space, as the first few upgrades are very cheap.

Finally, crafted items are not worth worrying about as gear until you are in VR areas.  You can make some white items to round out your gear, but anything beyond that is just overkill.  VR levels take far longer than normal levels, and as such the value of crafting a green or blue is much higher.

Your'e not alone... I don't usually like the idea of a mule character or a character devoted strictly to crafting, but it's starting to seem like in this game it's going to be a necessity... What I'd like to do is just take the hit in skill points and have my toon at least do some of the crafting skills....

The pack horse thing is something I'll probably try since I have the imperial edition, but so far I;m constantly running out of bag/bank space and it's a bit distracting, especially trying to remember which peices of armor or weapons I need to keep for research, which in turn takes up more space....

Then again like Landrix said, I've had this same problem in pretty much all of the MMO's that I've played... (GW2 being the sole exception bc of the collection slots, but even those would get filled up eventually if I wasn;t actively crafting with those materials) It just seems to be more pronounced in ESO, but I will say that crafting in this game is a lot more entertaining, feels more fun and is a bit more realistic than I'm used to...

One thing I am gratefull for, is that I remember there being a LOT less bag and bank space during the PTS, so theres that. I bet in no small part to people like us complaining about bags getting filled up with mats.

"I'm sick of following my dreams. I'm just going to ask where they're going and hook up with 'em later."

since i plan on eventually having all the craft skills, i currently have 4 mule toons each for a different set of mats.  i have my playable alt hold things like maps and costumes.  I'm haveing fun leveling and gathering that i won't start really leveling craft till i'm a bit bored doing that.

How do you have a pack horse?  is there a way to have it hold stuff?

First thing I want to note is that the easiest thing to do for inventory management to not have to run back and forth to the bank is to find a buddy that you can send "Return to Sender" (or Return to Dex) mails to.  That way you can send mails while on the run with stuff attached, they'll hit the Return button when they see it and it will be in your mail for 30 days so you can attend to it later.

I'll tell you what's been getting me by besides that.  My main happens to be a Clothier and Alchemist.  I find I can hold all the flowers/plants for Alchemy since they are all the same all the way up to max level.  I've also upgraded my bag space a few times.  And as far as the horse, yes you go to the stable and pay 250 each day to get another bag space unlocked (Basically feed the horse to carry more), but it's giving you one more bag space in essence.  Between buying more slots from the vendor and feeding the horse, I think I have about 100 or more bag slots right now.

I try not to loot too much stuff like pots while questing/adventuring/dungeons because it eats too much into my space. Another trick I read on the ESO forums was to NOT pick up every bit of Provisioning materials you come across until you find a recipe whose level is toward the end of the current range you have unlocked (for example, if your provisioner can make stuff from level 1-19, then find a level 15 recipe and then gather the mats needed for that recipe only and make it as it will level it faster and won't clutter up your inventory with tons of other mats.)

So main is clothing/alchemy, alt 1 is just provisioning since it can still eat up a lot of space, alt 2 is blacksmith and woodworking, alt 3 is enchanting since there are a ton of runes.  I find that that distribution works for me.  So when I get full while on my main, I send a couple mails to my Return buddy with Blacksmith/Woodworking drops, a couple mails with my collected runes and glyph drops, and if I knew what provisioning stuff I needed and was collecting them then I would send a couple mails with provisioning mats.  All those mails my Return buddy would hit the Return button and I can log onto each character later when convenient and pull down the stuff that is for their crafting profession.

As far as leveling enchanting, blacksmithing, woodworking, clothing, the best thing is to find a swap buddy that is leveling the same crafts as you, each of you craft a bunch of stuff  (see other posts for what to make and what level for best xp), swap and deconstruct the stuff that your swap buddy made.  You get more xp that way.

The horse slots just add additional bag slots to your character when the horse is "equipped", I believe.  I've put 10 slots on one of my characters just by feeding the imperial horse oats every day for 250 g each time.

You can actually do this once every 20 hours.  Just go to a nearby stable merchant and about mid-way down their dialog panel you can buy three different horse foods...one gives speed, one gives stamina, and the last one gives "carrying capacity" (aka bag slots).

As for horses, I have noticed that if you bought the Imperial Edition you can buy as many Imperial horses as you want for one gold. I have one called Workhorse, the other named Speedy.

I plan on giving Workhorse 50 carrying spaces for when I go farming.  :)
