Frustrated Sorc

Just need to vent.  My DPS sucks!  I'm looking at Deltia's/Parfax builds and they talk about 10k, 15k, 18k DPS and at best I'm getting 2k to 4k DPS :(   I'm seeing health over 20k and magicka 25k to 31k and mine (no food/potion) 17k health and 21k magicka.  I understand my gear is sub-par compared to what they have but it's not THAT far off.  I would think I would at least to be able to hit 8k DPS.

I've played Sorc's in MMO's for over two decades and for the first time I have to consider I may just be a bad player.

Anyway, I have not felt like playing much and just waiting for armor research to finish so I can make 8 trait stuff to see if that will help.

Thanks for listening.

I understand the frustration.  I am not a sorc, but I always have trouble keeping up with the insane DPS that many of these guys are putting out.  I have come to a few realizations:

1) Gear matters.  These are specific min/max builds that require ideal set combos that synergize.  Most of it is spell/weapon damage stacking coupled with proc bonuses.

2) Skill rotation matters.  They play right into the set bonuses and the buffs and debuffs have to be up and active the entire fight.

3) Personal skill matters.  This is where my downfall comes.  Virtually every skill used has to be animation cancelled, every buff/debuff has to be reapplied when they run out and you have to position yourself so that you can keep pouring on damage without interruption.  You also have to manage your resources well so don't get stuck with only weapon attacks.

In my experience, if you lack in any of these 3 areas, the DPS will never reach the upper level.  It is also my experience that you do not have to be 10-18k sustained to be effective in vet dungeons, regular DSA and regular Trials.

much of their "ideal" gear @V14 is prohibitively expensive, but there are substitutes that can be had for very reasonable costs.  Martial gear @V13 is 4-5k vs. V14 for 35-60k.  The difference would only matter to min/maxers.  The key seems to be 21k health (with blue food buff) and as much spell damage and magicka as you can get.  I've been trying the Parafax skills, it takes some getting used to, and I really miss Crystal Shards :)

The 8 trait sets are not great for Sorcs.  You should be looking at Deshaan for sets *Lake Hlallu and the place east of the mage college have good spell damage sets.*
Spell damage >>> magicka.  Getting spell damage on drop jewelry is tough, but you can make enchants for it.
Many of the end game builds you see linked just don't do that well if you don't have very high spell damage to work with.  If you would like to talk about builds sometime, I will gladly talk with you.

I haven't looked at the Parafax build, but my sorc is based on Deltia's Igniion sorc and I can get some pretty nice DPS (peaked at 34k on a large pack once, average is 20-25k for trash pulls and 8-12k for boss).  Anyways, learning any build will take quite a bit of time actually.  Also, many of those builds a quite specific in gear set up, but alternatives are available.  For instance, my sorc is low on AP so instead of using Rings of Cyrodiil light (248,000 AP a piece) I use 3 pieces Syrabane.  The bonus isn't has large, but you have to work with what you got.

For Sorcs, and I'm assuming you are a magicka sorc, the key really is to max spell power.  Right now, that almost requires you to wear martial knowledge (it truly is an amazing set and you really only need 4 pieces).  And like Verve said, the VR14 set of martial knowledge is VERY expensive right now, but I get by just fine using VR 12 stuff.  Other good sets are Adroitness, 2 pieces hundings rage, Cyrodiil light, and Syrabane.  Now if you are not yet VR 12 or above, I'd say don't worry too much about the gear.  I wore blue VR5 and 7 gear all the way up to 12.

As for stats, the aim is to get 18-20k health so you don't get one shotted in dungeons.  After that, everything should be magicka.  For gear priority it should be Spell power>magicka>spell crit>everything else.  One final thing to keep in mind is the use and acquisition of champion points.  Champion points can make a pretty big difference in power.  If you are a newish 14 and don't have many champion points, don't expect the same numbers as some of the top streamers and guide writers.

In closing, don't get too concerned if you can't reach the 15k single target DPS you see.  Often those screen shots are cherry picked to show the absolute best.  They are achieved by running with a well organized and well geared group.  Buffs and debuffs are constantly maintained, and as such the DPS is quite better.  Also remember, this is a game and you should be having fun.  So long as you enjoy your character and how it plays, that is what matters.  If you are worried that you might "let the group down" or something along those lines (I worry about this type of thing) don't worry if you can't achieve the "perfect 15-18k DPS.  5-7k is likely sufficient for most content.

I very much like what tnliverpool just wrote and shall quote one passage again... it is very important;

"Also remember, this is a game and you should be having fun.  So long as you enjoy your character and how it plays, that is what matters.  If you are worried that you might "let the group down" or something along those lines (I worry about this type of thing) don't worry if you can't achieve the "perfect 15-18k DPS.  5-7k is likely sufficient for most content."

Thank you all for your time and thoughts.

The buying of gear and such; is that done on the auction house?  Sorry to ask such a noob question.  I never thought I would have to buy stuff so I never paid attention to how to buy and sell things.

Yes, I'm V14 and I do worry about being the weak link in the group.  Also it seems I have to run a bar switching, keep buffs up rotation which is hard to get use too.

LOL, I've spent all my coin on feeding horses across several toons and Bank upgrades.  Time to quest for a bit to make money and get the gear suggested.

Again, thank you for the words of encouragement.

You can buy gear off trade guilds.

You can also craft gear, or upgrade drops (in the case of martial knowledge.)

Honestly, with just crafted gear you should easily pull far more than 4k dps.  I could craft you pieces of the sets I am wearing if desired (I'm short on upgrade mats for more than blue quality, but that is more than sufficient for Vet dungeons.)
If you want very top of the line gear, the most important thing is to farm raw crafting materials (largely for cloth/leather.)  Since the upgrade materials can be found refining these, and are generally the limiting factor, you can get sets for cheap at low quality and just upgrade them.  Excepting maybe a very few drops you will need these to get the best gear unless you want to pay a lot of gold!

I'd suggest you try a different rotation, either something like the ignition sorc, or if you would like a very simple working build I have one that I run which is different and easy to use.  Get your basic set gear like I stated, and then see what you think.  If you have a specific time when you would like to try that in game, please let some of us know (I *we* will be glad to help you craft gear and talk about builds!  I'll be out for dinner tomorrow night, but most of the rest of the day I will be around, and will get on for sure should I see a reply!)

Buying gear is done mostly at the trade guilds.  From my experience, the best guilds (and I mean best in terms of have the largest selection not always the best price) are found in Mournhold (right at the wayshrine), Rawl'kha (Reapers March also by the wayshine), Belkarth (Craglorn - just south over the bridge out of the town), Riften (SE just outside town), Wayrest...  There are more but these are some of the more populated ones, especially the first three I listed.  Also, don't hesitate to ask in guild chat if you are looking for something specific (FYI I am still looking for VR12 Necklace of Adroitness if anyone has it).

For crafted gear you can use the guild website to request stuff.  If you don't have the credit, someone in guild will still likely make it for you if you ask.  I have a cheap going rate of a few gold per piece of equipment up to blue quality :)

And like Jairone said, just keep playing around and tweaking your build until you feel comfortable playing it.  Go to a lower level zone and practice on world bosses.  The frozen waterfall ice atronoch in Bangkorai is a nice world boss to practice on.  Good amounts of hit points, he is slow, and most his attacks are easy to avoid.  Another good option is any giant world boss as well.  Likewise, you can practice on regular giants and mammoths, but the fight will likely be much quicker.

Lastly, never fear that you are holding a group back.  This is especially true for any pure guild group.  If I lead a dungeon I generally have no problem going slower and making sure everyone understands everything and that people have time to ask questions (there are times I am in a rush but I will let people know if this is the case).

The short answer is Deltia is playing a cherry picked build with cherry picked allies, not playing the game with friends.  I would rather play the game with friends.  Your mileage may vary.

Work on rotations also. With practicing last night I came to the conclusion that I am terrible at them myself. If you are not getting the proper rotation you are cutting out a lot of your dps.  I am looking for critters to practice on currently. I believe I remember a few delves in Cryodiil that were made of mostly solo troll pulls. This for myself seems ideal. Nothing but lots o f solo vr 12 high hit point mobs. A 20% exp boost for doing the named. Chests can drop vr14 gear, including the much sought after martial knowledge. I normally get 3-5k. I was pulling just short of 8k with a bit of practice, but this is still far below what I also see as the 'ideal' set up. Practice can make nicer results though.

Thank you @NukeLaCoog for the Martial armor and to the people in raidcall that offered advice.

After redoing my armor and Attributes, self buffed no food, 23k Magicka, 17k health, 1.6k spell dmg, spell crit 43%, spell resis 10k, mag recovery 925.

Not great but not bad.

Going to spend a lot of time working on rotation as that seems key in maxing out DPS
