Evolution of an Event Leader

A few months ago, during a Family meeting, I asked for more ESO events. Fog's answer, “if you want more events, lead them, anyone rank Lorgair and above can lead an event”. This came as a surprise to me but I took his words to heart and set about scheduling and leading events that I felt would interest ESO players (and me). Since then I've held events ranging from Fishing Excursions to Cyrodiil Skyshard hunts.

By far the most successful events have been “For the Undaunted”. For a few weeks I ran this event every day at 7AM. After a short time this event took on a life of it's own. Other participants, tired of waiting around for their turn (and with some prompting from Pops) began running their own groups concurrently. Soon other Event Leaders emerged and I turned over M-F runs to Papo (he has since turned over some of these to Tigallo). We went from 2-3 Dungeon runs to 10-13 every morning. Another effect of these Undaunted runs is we have a fairly close European Prime/Eastern Morning in-game community.

Now to be clear I did not do this by myself. I am very grateful to be accepted by the ESO community as leader, and to those who have stepped up to lead other events. My whole purpose in posting this is to say, IF I CAN DO THIS, ANYONE CAN. I hope to inspire and encourage others to take the plunge.

Your first golden opportunity is to take over the Undaunted event for Saturday and Sunday, I will be stepping down from these. There is also a need for Undaunted runs during Western Prime time.

Here is what I learned:

1-If you build it, they will come, post an event on the calender and you will be surprised by how many folks will attend.

2-If you want more events, lead them, want to clear Craglorn-set up an event.

3-Be fearless, this is my first MMO, had no idea I could lead an event...surprise.

4-Lead the type of events you are interested in, chances are other are also interested.

5-Stretch your comfort zone, I still do not have the tactical experience to lead AvA events but I have no problem leading other events in the AvA zone.

If other event leaders have sage advise for beginning leaders please add to this post.

TL/DR: get off the sidelines and lead an event, you will be encouraged by the Family's support, and may be surprised by how enjoyable it is to provide service to others.

thanks for giving me the opportunity too take over the weekday undaunted runs.  Like you i am handing the batten over to future leaders like Tigallo.  This is not because we are giving up but it is an experience that others may want and this is allowing me too try other areas and ideas like my Vet zone map clear and the Craglorn questing event.

As verve says if you post it and run then they will come.

I'm really glad that more and more people are joining in on these events.  Through your efforts Verve, numerous people have been introduced to the glory that is the group content of ESO!  This is especially remarkable considering the "different" take on social aspects in ESO.  I wanted to add a few bullets to your list as well...

  1. Don't be afraid to lead an impromptu event (not scheduled ahead of time) - Just log in and got an itch for Craglorn delves?  Maybe you want to conquer a veteran dungeon or do some raiding in Cyrodiil.  Just call out in guild for a group.  If no one answers, just keep pestering and pestering and annoying people until they feel guilty and join you.  At least that's the approach I take :)
  2. Don't be afraid to lead the unknown. - Just because you don't know the ins and outs of a dungeon or boss or Cyrodiil, don't be afraid to take charge anyways.  Often people just want a leader to follow.  Let people know and make it a learning process for everyone.  A simple "Hey guildies!  I want to go fight Bogdan the Nightflame tonight!  I haven't done him before, but lets all get together and learn it as a family and take him down!"

Yes the ESO world is beautiful and you can easily spend all your time running around solo in the open world.  I can almost guarantee that if you enjoy that, you will enjoy the rewarding and challenging group content that is out there!  Be the person in charge!  Put out a call to arms for your allies!  Adventure forth and vanquish your foes!

Thank you all for the kind words.

Think I will compile a list of helpful hints for Event Leaders, so keep 'em coming.

One very beneficial tip I learned accidentally when I needed a fourth member for an Undaunted run; Wisper Family members a direct invitation, many folks have gotten involved in running events with the Family just by being asked to.

Another tip was taught to me by an Event Leader I have great admiration for (if you get a chance to go on one of Prissy's Events-take it); don't burn yourself out running events, do as many events as you can but take as much care of yourself as the care you provide others.

Started up "gone Fishin'', just an example of events that are of interest to the Event Leader.  Want to make an event, you'll need to be a Family Member for a full seven days (minimum) and have at least 1000 Family Honor Points, in other words anyone Rank "Lorgair" and above can lead an event.
