We hosted a French student a couple months back, and his family mentioned that he was descended from Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Since my grandma was born a Cady, I was naturally curious about how we were related. Off I went to research it, signing up for Ancestry.com. This turned out to be as highly addictive a hobby as gaming. I discovered my exchange student and I were 9th cousins, believe it or not, and I found another cousin after emailing her for to request if I could put a copy of a picture of her (and my) ancestor on my profile. We've had a nice exchange since then.

I haven't found the Irish blood yet, but I bet it's out there somewhere! :D Has anyone else been bitten by this bug?

Is Ancestry.com the best website?  Have you tried any other sites?  Sounds like it might be interesting.

Both my mother and mother-in-law are researching family trees, so I hear all about Ancestry.com from both of them.

As for my Irish roots, it's about 4 generations back on my mother's side :)

My uncle did extensive genealogy on my mothers side and he printed books for all of us. We have Irish heritage on my grandfathers side, but the most interesting is that we are direct descendants of William Bradford of Plymouth Rock. First Governor of the Pilgrims in America. Talk about roots! No genealogy on my fathers side which is Polish. His parents immigrated to America before they had children. Genealogy is so interesting!

One of my dad's great uncles completed a geneology in 1960.  My father is only in it because one of his ancestors married a Crosby.  Now there is some interesting stuff in this line of the Crosby's.  He tracked them back to Home-in-Spaulding, England back to 1440.  During the Revulotionary War Enoch Crosby was hung as the Conneticut Spy.  He was actually one of three I think they hung that could have been the spy, but I really need to look back at that.  I know he was the main one because you can read his name on one of those NY historical markers on Route 84 at a rest area on a hill just east of the Taconic - can't remember if it is east or west side.

I really should get on ancestory.com and figure out the Kelly's.  Should be interesting considering there are only 12 clans of Kelly's from Ireland and more than one Englishized spelling of it.  After all, most could not write and most of the immigration people at the time did their best to spell, Caighliagh and failed badly.  ;)

Don't mess with Mama Bear, I might hug you too tight. =D

My mother's side of the family took extensive notes and left me several complete branches back to the late 1700's. My Dad's side on the other hand left very little, but I enjoy researching both sides.  My Dad was always worried about the "skeletons" but they are the most interesting ones!

My mother has been doing thus too lately though I don't hear about her forays as often these days.   Before this site came about she had already traced so e lineage back and since my last name is Mullis, I know that my decendants come fro Ireland in the western side of the island slightly north of the. Ideal section.  I also know that they org I a,my came from Wales in the 12th century, and I have my family crest.

However since my mother has been using these ancestry websites, she has tracked some interesting tidbits.  For example I have. Relative in the blood line of the king of Scotland's, and I am related to a  roman emperor eso, the one who married emperer flavius.   I am also related to the outlaw Jesse James, but not a direct descendant of his.   Sadly though I did not inherent any lands or titles but it is cool knowing that I am related to a a roman emperess.

My Aunt has been able to trace my Great Grandmothers side all the way back to Ireland in 1025CE/AD and my Great Grandfathers side back to Germany in the 1500's. My mothers side could only be traced as far back as the 17th Century somewhere near the border of Denmark and Germany.

My Great-grandmother was Dorothy May Nichols, her lineage was traced right back to the twenty-seventh great grandparents one of whom was  Murchad Mac Diarmata O Cheinnselaig of the Leinsters.  I can trace it back a little bit further than that since Murchad Mac Diarmata O Cheinnselaig was the son of Diarmait mac Máel na mBó who can be traced back as far as Crimthann mac Énnai (died 483), his father Énnae Cennsalach and his grandfather Bressal Bélach (died 436).

Generation of Twenty-seven-Times-Great-Grandparents

Murchad Mac Diarmata O Cheinnselaig, King of Leinster (Dorothy's twenty-seven-times-great-grandfather) was born about 1025. Murchad died in 1070, aged about 45, in Ireland.

SADB INGE MACBRICC (Dorothy's twenty-seven-times-great-grandmother).

Murchad mac Diarmata O Cheinnselaig King of Leinster and Sadb inge MacBricc had one son:
Donnchad mac Murchada King of Leinster

GILLA MICHIL O'BRAENAIN (Dorothy's twenty-seven-times-great-grandfather).

UCHDELB IGEN CEARNACHAIN O'GAIRBITA (Dorothy's twenty-seven-times-great-grandmother)

Gilla Michil O'braenain and Uchdelb igen Cearnachain O'Gairbita had one daughter:
Orlaith ingen O'braenain Queen of Leinster

HASCULF RICHARD SAINT HILARY (Dorothy's twenty-seven-times-great-grandfather)
MRS HASCULF UNKNOWN (Dorothy's twenty-seven-times-great-grandmother)
Hasculf Richard Saint Hilaryand Mrs Hasculf Unknown had one son:
James Saint Hilary about 1105

COUNT AIMON II DE BOURBON (Dorothy's twenty-seven-times-great-grandfather)
COUNTESS ALDESINDE DE NEVERS (Dorothy's twenty-seven-times-great-grandmother)
Aimon II de Bourbon and Aldesinde de Nevers had one son:
Archambaud VII de Bourbon about 1103

Edit:  I updated my post with some extra research that went beyond the family genealogy documents I had.
"Diarmaid, son of Mael-na-mbo, King of Leinster, of the foreigners of Ath-cliath, and of Leath-Mogha-Nuadhat, was slain and beheaded in the battle of Odhbha, on Tuesday, the seventh of the Ides of February, the battle having been gained over him by Conchobhar O'Maeleachlainn, King of Meath. There were also slain many hundreds of the foreigners and Leinstermen, along with Diarmaid, in that battle. In it was killed Gillaphadraig O'Fearghaile, lord of the Fortuatha, &c. Of the death of Diarmaid was said:"

I don't work on my family's genealogy, but Ancestry is absolutely the best site for access to source material. I use it quite a bit in my historical research. If you need access to newspapers (especially death announcements and obituaries), you might also want to use GenealogyBank.com

Have gone back about as far as I can.  I learned contrary to popular belief (well, at least it is what I envisioned) that I was not some lost princess from Europe but just a product of religious persecution as my father's side of the family left Germany and moved to England - then to the US between the early 1700's and the 1800's.  We weren't Catholics and I'm pretty sure we were potato farmers.

My mother's side only went back to Italy (I did learn I was 1/4 Italian so it makes perfect sense that I talk with my hands in motion constantly and love musicals.  My grandmother as it turns out was full blooded Italian which I had never known.

It is my grandfather's side of the family that is steeped in mystery - or not so much.  He was born in Kentucky and the record keeping of Kentucky in the early 1900's is at best - T E R R I B L E.   The census records have him listed as two different dates of birth and one says "child 8-10" on the list of household occupants.  His name is also spelled 2 different ways (Tomas, Thomas) which are actually both possible.  He was one of 10 children - so I imagine his poor mother was having trouble keeping track of them all :).   This is were he met and married my grandmother whose parents had moved from Italy to Indiana and then to Kentucky.  I use  the term marry loosely since there is no record of a marriage and I'm pretty sure all they did was jump over a broom stick and start living together.

So with all I have found out - I'm a German Hillbilly - and wouldn't have it any other way... well except the Princess thing would have been a nice gig.  :)

Haha, Morigana, that's standard census returns through the early 20th century. These records were written by the census marshall (not by the reporting family member), so he would write down what he heard. It's also pretty clear they didn't always talk to the person in the household who knew the dates of birth/ages (and some folks outright lied about their ages as they got older).

I'm an Australian with English heritage on one side and German/Polish on the other. Have been able to trace the English side back to 1600's and the German's to the early 1800's. With all the conflict in that area it can be very difficult to track things as many records have been destroyed in the various conflicts.

My sisters are actually visiting the area later this year so hoping to uncover more mysteries!

I've been tracing things on and off for the last 20 years and you seem to hit road blocks at some points and then something will just come up out of nowhere and get you going again. My biggest advice is to talk to as many family as you can as you never know what information people are hoarding with them. My English grandfather was a LightHorseman and artillery driver and gunner in WWI and was alive for the first 16 or 17 years of my life but my interest wasn't there. Now I have been researching his military history, it's probably the biggest regret of my life that I didn't talk to him about it. (if he would that is?) He went through almost 3 years of some of the worst conflicts of that war and survived and no surviving member of our family knows anything about it! I don't think we humans start to think to much about all of this until we get a little older :)

I think he'd have had some tales to tell. Good Luck with your research...but yes, it is addictive!

I updated my post with a little bit of Irish history.  Murchad mac diarmata was as far back as Great grandmothers most recent genealogy report had gone so I tried to trace it back a little further.

Thanks for making this thread, I've spent a few good afternoons going over my family history since this thread began and it has been a wonderfully educational experience.  I always knew I had Irish heritage, but I had no idea the extent of it until now.
