Tips for playing guardian (PVE), if you would.

Guardian and ele seem to be my nemesis classes. It is easy enough for me to understand why I am below average with an ele, I just don't have the play time in on one. Guardian, on the other hand, is still a puzzle for me. I do ok, and understand that it is an active defense class, but we don't still do not seem to agree with each other. It could be that I am too old, and slow, except that I can play thief without relying on stealth. Heck, I can stay alive on my glassy Sw/Sw mesmer better than I can with the Guard.

I don't know what I don't know and thought I would see if anyone can spur some new lines of thought for me.

What build/gear/skills/weapons are you using and what content are you trying to do?

He is equipped in Berserker armor, with a mix of hand me down trinkets. 2240 power, 50% crit and 184% crit damage. The move to berserker has helped.

I am currently using GS & mace/torch. I am using the Silverwastes to try out the adjustments, but would like to use in dungeons here & there.

I am pretty happy with virtues (1/1/1) and zeal (2/2/3). Currently trying out honor (1/3/1 or 2) to add some survivability cushion. Have tried radiance, but cleanses seemed to be lacking. With Pure of Voice, I have been doing ok using Hold the Line and Stand Your Ground.

I'm running something similar to This, and it's more of a high risk high reward build. You can swap mace for sceptre or sword and it should still work

Been having quite a lot of fun with it in spvp. For wvw and PvE I tend to swap to travelers runes, and if I'm leading or running in a group I'll switch to Valor: VII and Virtues: VII. Elite I tend to swap between Renewed focus for solo play and Feel my Wrath for group.

If you meet yourself on the testing track, don't make eye contact. Lab boys tell me that'll wipe out time. Entirely.

I ended up with something similar after speaking with Leslie last night. I have only about 20 minutes of playtime with the new build, but I like it very much so far. I am using different weapons than you have listed.

Although I like the mace, the symbol seems to take forever to cast, and the weapon speed seems slow. I haven't done any testing, just very limited observation. So in my single session, I tried out GS w/ Sc/F. So far, I like it very much. A traited focus is wonderful.

Also with a glassy build I went with "Monk's Focus" as the Valor GM. That, w/ smite on a low cooldown, has helped both offense and defense quite a bit.  I like Judge's intervention, but will look at swapping Contemplation of Purity for the power signet, as you have shown in the linked build.

Thank you for the feedback! I intend to  continue to monkey around with my traits, and take another look at trying to build around work in the mace. As much as I would like to use melee/melee, I usually find that a ranged weapon would have helped. Unfortunately, I tend not to figure that out until after I am in combat.

Yeah, not having a ranged option can be a bit tricky, that's mainly why I rune Bane Signet -> knockback has been invaluable in some situations for creating distance. I like mace for it's 2 skill though I will agree it is a slower weapon. Sceptre has it's perks too: gotta love that immobilize :D

GS/Staff is another decent option for PvE if you are looking for a ranged option. Another trick I've learned over the years is if you are grouped with someone you can use Merciful Intervention. It has a nice teleport on it and as long as you drop the skill near an ally it will port you to them (I have my skills set to fast cast with ground target).

It will be interesting to see how traits play out once we get access to Dragon Hunter. I can see myself using a bow over staff in certain situations even if I don't make use of the traps.

If you meet yourself on the testing track, don't make eye contact. Lab boys tell me that'll wipe out time. Entirely.

Hi Cyvil, we had a great talk last night but I did miss the weapon topic a bit. I always have my GS in hand whether it is wvw, pve or spvp. In WvW group, the second is always my staff. Solo WvW with the meditation build, I would play around trying out your mace and even sword/shield for your second set. The single handed sword has a lot of great skills and is fun. Dungeons for my second I will use my staff, however, paths like SE 3, etc., where we need range - the scepter is the way to go. Just play around with them out in pve and even in the practice area in spvp. I use the practice arena in spvp a lot to check out different weapons and skills. You have the profession boss targets to play with and the two big bosses as well:).
