Mesmer Roles? What does a mesmer bring to a group? What would a mesmmer bring to WvW?

I just recently hit my first lvl 80.  My Mesmer!  Right, now shes a mix of power and toughness based, which is a result of leveling mostly. I was just wondering what people at large saw as the support options for a mesmer. Now, let me clarify I'm not speaking about the obvious. (Time Warp, Null Field, and Portal).

I've come to view the class as a thinking man's caster, the power of the mesmer is in the strategy. so I'm curious to see what if any strats mesmers around here have discovered, made, or seen that works well to support their groups. I'm looking for this in pve first and foremost, and pvp/wvw second.

And as an added afterthough,  What stat priorities in general are recommended for wvw?  Vitality toughness, power?

I highly recommend checking out these two resources. The first one in particular drastically improved my gameplay and opened up a wide variety of builds and strategies and synergies to me. http://www.youtube.com/user/MrPrometheus0110 http://guildwars2hub.com/guides

I forgo very much extra toughness and vitality and lean towards power/crit/crit damage, with a little condition damage thrown in. With the staff/GS I use, every effort is made to stay slippery and at range. I plan not to get hit much, which sometimes actually works out. I have noticed in group events, the Mesmer can help take heat off people because the mobs often will go for the clones. In a WvW zerg many enemy still seem to think your clones are real and will waste time on them. I do have fun running around the world with it, and have soloed some stuff I initially did not think I could. I might have to up the toughness/vitiality some if I started using it in hard dungeons though. For the heck of it I just finished gearing out an 80 elemetalist. Leveled as dagger/dagger pretty much the whole way. Have lots of toughness and some healing power because of the "in your face" style. Both classes/builds require many more times the key mashing and movement as my warrior to accomplish the same end result, but they are certainly not boring. TLDR; If your going to stay ranged and in the back of the pack, and don't mind dying to a thief or AoE/conditions now and then when caught with stuff on cooldown, a mesmer can stay more glass cannon IMO.

when you play it right mesmers are freaking mean in wvw, no need for vit and toughness i dont want to say anything for wvw because usually you're running with a zerg so it rarely matters what you do , cuz everyone can do something about it but if you trait temporal curtain to block projectiles that can be really useful, not to mention the pull is almost a must if you want to screw people over ( see a thief lay down shadow? just pull him out :O ) i like the clones cripple on death trait as well since it helps applying a lot of slows here and there mesmers are one of those classes that are totally okay to go glass cannon build, since you really don't need to be in melee range to be really dps effective, some professions don't have that option..

Mesmer's defense is in their evasion skills and rolling. That's why a lot of builds you see are focused on using Staff and Sword (not GS). Mesmer is very fickle about its player's style and preferences. You will have to experiment with what feels good for you, you can use guides, but don't put a whole lot of weight on what you read. What works for one Mesmer player, may just not work at all for you. You'll find that with a lot of classes, but the Mesmer is that one class that you really need to have skill and experience to play correctly, and it must be custom built just for you.

/signed to Sekkerhund. The things I posted above are general info for help with making builds and not to advocate "best.mesmer.build.ever." Read up and watch the videos to get an idea of what the powers and synergies are that you can build and try out some things. I have changed multiple times for the sheer sake of variety. While leveling to 80 I was running sword/pistols and staff - this proved to be extraordinarily effective to my play style - but I wanted to try some other things out (plus the way I assigned my points was terrible and I HAD To respec anyway). My current build is technically meant for staff/greatsword, but I wind up running scepter/torch instead of greatsword just for the fun of getting scepter and torch achievement feats - but I also have the flexibility built into it to let me take great advantage of churning shatters and the torch when I want to change my feats around (basically I either run the greatsword or the torch feat in the 20 point slot). Mesmers are meant for variety. There is a saying in GW2, if you are not changing at least one thing (weapon swapping or some skills or traits) every so often, you are probably playing sub-par. The best time I have had in the game was when I did TA story mode. It was tough, but not too tough. We were all new at it and figured out the boss fights and stuff between wipes (not too many, but enough to make us think). What was truly awesome for me was that I literally found a use for EVERY single weapon a mesmer can equip between all of the different boss battles. It was amazing. We would wipe, I would think, this would be a better strategy against this situation, swap some traits and weapons around, and bam, it worked beautifully. It was just the best finding critical success over failure uses for everything at my disposal. I swapped out some skills, too, but not nearly as much as the weapons and traits - those were the real game changers.

Thanks for the info guys! I would agree the youtube videos from Mr. Prometheus are top notch. I was just wondering about other points of view. Most of you pretty much hit, my enjoyment of the mesmer right on the head. Its the variety, the strategy, and the go with flow play style that seems to work for a mesmer. Makes me feel a little better about my experimenting now.

In an effort to make myself more useful in WvW (at least more useful than a necro), I went to work on a mesmer. Watching and studying the Mr Prometheus videos made it all very clear that I should stick to necro.

i posted a build in this section titled mesmer build it`s what i have been using since lvl 30 hes 71 now and what i will use in WvW rather running with the zerglings or small scale solo . its a sword/pistol/focus and staff build degined to produce lots of clones, phantasms etc to confuse the enemy in wvw, as well as for survibality it is very fun build and way op . very flexable , if solo slot moa , can slor null field inplace of decoy if needed , don`t shatter unless you need to evade or stun target , try not to move if in wvw, after spawning illusions , as that`ll let them know which to attack . if your clones have a certain wep type equiped try and have the same it`ll look silly if you have a staff and are jumping around all the illusions have a sword and are in melee may as well wave at them lol . you gain more by not shattering them , and leaving them up to die on their own, thru buffs, effects etc plus their dps is very high, at 71 i`ve had my phantasms crit for 3k to 4k a hit , not counting confusion on death, fury, regen, retailation boons etc http://www.gw2db.com/skill-builds/2504-roaming-skrimsher

I only shatter mine as a finishing move when I need that extra bit of dps to outright kill the enemy just a bit faster. It's taking a bit of practice to get the timing and enemy health percentage worked out, however.

Mesmer was a tough cookie for me to crack initially. I tried to make an Illusion based build but was highly unreliable due to their short life span and huge cooldowns. I eventually settled on a build focusing on using Glamours and spreading confusion. I'm not sure if the Portal counts as an area the Glamour skills would play on.
