Will your character have a one word or two word name?

By:

Cetacea
Saighdear
GW2: Cetacea.2068 ESO: @Cetacea

Posted On: 05/20/2012 at 07:53 AM

So when I first picked up GW1, I struggled with naming my characters because it forced a minimum of two words for a name. I have a set of character names I use for almost all games I play and they are all one word names. As I was trying to decide how to create a naming convention I would enjoy, I took into consideration that I like the idea of people I know being able to recognize this is one of my alts. So I decided to use my normal handles but instead of using a common surname I chose to say "of Pnume" as though Pnume was a land or house my characters hail from. For example Cetacea of Pnume.

I still have not decided what naming convention I want to use in GW2. Because of the pre-order, I could very well get single names for all of my characters if I move quickly enough on head start day. I can even use the same names I know and love and will have reserved for me in GW1. But I'm really liking the idea of a surname.

Another alternative I find appealing is keeping my main gaming handle as the surname and then use a first name that describes the profession type. For example Sneaky Cetacea (Thief), Creepy Cetacea (Necromancer).

Ugh... soooo many decisions.... and not much time left to decide.....

So how will you choose?

OK - sorry to break the mold....

I've been using three word names in Beta Weekends... Morgana the

I had Morgana the Dark and saw Morgan the Mad :) we were both Necros

But this way I can always be Morgana regardless. The only reason I am changing from Morigana to Morgana is to have Morgana the Light as my elementalist and if I remember correctly 17 characters (includes spaces) is the max.

Now I could go totally like... Morgana na Gadai (the thief) , Morgana na Cron (the dark), and Morgana na Solas (the light). That's if I translated correctly which is dubious and lucky at best.

Ignari Raye(Charr Ranger, lvl 12)- Death is like an arrow that is already in flight and your life only lasts until it reaches you. I was actually considering going a humerous route this time with my names, but the RPer in me was having a fit so I changed my mind.

I'd seriously considered naming my first character "Main Character" and then carrying on with "Alternate One" "Alternate Two" and so on.

I've decided though to go with a naming scheme where all my characters have the surname al'Zhan if i can do an apostrophy if not, then "al Zhan"

Well, I will have a Briseadh, now if I use the last name Crionna like I added in Warhammer, not sure. In BWE it is simply Briseadh and she is a tall, blonde Norn Guardian. Just like warhammer, Briseadh, will be found wielding a large two handed sword unless the situation really calls for a change up. =)

and I'll have alts - just not sure of their names yet. More than likely some twist one who they are with Irish words of course. After all Briseadh Crionna means Battle Wise and it fit her for Warhammer.

Go for 'G' rated. I dare you! =D Your words carry far more weight and power than you will ever know. Never expect people to take them the same way either.

Don't mess with the Mama Bear or her cubs (aka this family). =D

Lot's of great discussion here :)

I always find it fascinating to hear some of the rationale behind something as simple as a name.

As an update, I am still undecided. Right now I am leaning heavily towards a common surname. Only because it will almost guarantee I can have the first name of my choice every time I roll a new toon regardless of timing. Specially with the thought of expansion packs a year or two down the road which will most likely mean new races and new professions that I will have to explore. Also, I'm the type to take 2 hours tweaking my new toon in character customization, and I really hate the thought of creating all of them on day one. Hmmm... wonder if GW2 will have birthdays again... decisions... decisions...

Tryin to work this out myself. My RL love, Avalonne, played GW1 and has names saved from there. I'd like my names to match with hers, would like them to fit together.

Knowing me, there's a big risk that my intended main character will end up on the shelf. For example, in Rift I thought my cleric would be my main (Mulch), but I came to not like him as much as my rogue and mage (if only we could switch name/sex/race between characters).

So I need to have all my names workable for a main and to link up with Avalonne's.

Got some ideas from this thread, perhaps linking em up using a common Gaelic root would be effective and elegant.

It seems most Humans, Charr and Norn use two word names and Asura and Sylvari use one word (I'm know there are exceptions to that, but I'm just going with what's most common). I combined that with some of the usual names I use and saved the two-worders in GW1. The single word names I have in mind aren't that common, so I should be able to grab them during head start.

And I know myself well enough to know that what is my main this year won't be my main next year as I will fall in love with a new profession every 3 to 6 months.

I did a test in BWE3 and by the second day one of my old stand by names was taken. So if I choose a single name I will have to move quickly.

For ease of recognition, I think I'll be taking a page out of Oldroar's book. In Warhammer, Oldroar was always Oldroar, and each alt he had simply had it's class added to the end.

In the same vein, I'll probably try for a simple "Dargron" for my main (if I can get it) as a simple, easy to remember and spell name for in-game mail or tells. Any alts I'll stick something characterful like "Stormcaller" (elementalist) on the end for a surname.

I've changed it around a little. As it turns out, I will be making a Sylvari and Asura.

Jaukka -Female Asura - Necromancer. Funfact:

An asura's name usually consists of a short, sharp first name with one or two syllables. Feminine asura names typically end in -i or -a vowel sounds, and the masculine in a consonant sound. Both male and female Asuras typically have two of the same letter in a row somewhere in their name. Any asura whose name does not follow these rules may risk ridicule during childhood. Asura do not have a last name, instead opting to use job titles, a krewe name, or honorifics to differentiate themselves. Those who choose to take a last name of a style similar to humans are rare and are considered eccentrics, though their surname is often ignored by other asura. -(http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Asura#Names)

Then I will make what I consider to be the absolutely perfect name for a Sylvari Thief.

Sylvia Nightshade - Female Sylvari - Thief.

Sylvia sounds wonderful since it's the closest name to Sylvari and Nightshade works because it's a poisonous plant! With the word, "night" in it! How could you go wrong!? :D

I almost always end up with at least 2 words, possibly 3. It all depends on the lore behind the character though. All of the asuran i've made are 1 word names. The more pomp and snoot i give to a character the more names i tack on to them. Look for Saeri Gar Innis, Char Durak, and Marissa Durak as some of my usual names.

Thankfully i'm fairly certain the guild screen will show you the current character name and account name for people logged in. So that can always help identify alts of people.
