Hello all,

I am playing GW2 while I wait for ESO to release, and am having a tough time deciding what to play. So far I have levelled a warrior, thief and necro to about level 10. I am also interested in trying a guardian.

I do plan to continue playing GW2 part time to participate in family events even after ESO is out. My question is what class would be a) not too painful to level and b) bring a strong contribution to WvW for family events?

Your input is appreciated!

IMHO, nothing levels as fast as a warr. They are also one of the easier profs to play. I know from experience that when I switch to my other classes it takes a while for my muscle memory to build up, but when I switch back to warr it is like I never stopped playing him.

Thanks for the reply Osu. Is it possible to have too many warriors running around? I see them everywhere.

Guardians! They are tough, do lot to help other players in the wvw area like speedboosts, stabilities and condition purging!

Awesome! But are guardians slow to level?

I actually found leveling my norn guardian to be faily quick and straight forward, mind you I did about 80% of his leveling in wvw. I recently rolled a elementalist for some upcoming world boss shinanigans and am quite liking it. After 2hrs running aorund I think he's at lvl 8 or 9.

If you meet yourself on the testing track, don't make eye contact. Lab boys tell me that'll wipe out time. Entirely.

I didnt know leveling via WvW would be fast at all. How does that work?

Levelling in WvW is fast.  Especially if your group takes a lot of supply camps, keeps, etc.

You'll gain huge amounts of XP doing it.  Doing a WvW event with GSCH typically gains a member around 4-6 levels per event, depending on how long you play for and what the intent of the WvW event is.  If it is to karma train WvW, you're golden.  If it is to actually play strategy and fight against the other server, you're still good but you won't level as much,  because you'll spend more time defending and in combat.

Combine playing WvW with map clearing all of the different races home areas like "Divinity's Reach"  ( Human's home area), and you'll be levelled up in no time with no risk of getting killed in one shot by NPCs.  You can get to all races home areas through Lion's Arch.

Speeding through your toons personal story also gets you a lot of XP.

Then there's crafting.  I know jack squat about crafting...beyond that it is the fastest, though most expensive way to level up.

As for choosing a profession for WvW, I suggest rolling a Guardian.  WvW is all about team play, and if you are wanting to play with a team of GSCH in WvW, the Guardian is the ultimate team player profession.  They are literally the "guardians" of the group.  Pun intended. They are fast, powerful and hard to kill.  They shake off conditions with ease, and are a total boon-fest.  They better the survivability of those around them.  My guardian was quick to level up by doing it the way I described.  I levelled up my guardian almost exclusively in WvW.  The only reason why my guardian went across Tyria, was to get to dungeons.  Everyone LOVES guardians in dungeon runs.

Awesome!  You've made a great choice!  I suggest that you equip a staff and great sword for your first weapons. They allow you to cover distance quickly and also allows you to fight up close or at range.  A hammer is another great weapon on a guardian, but not so great for quickness.  I keep a hammer in my bag for special occasions.

Choosing the "Save yourselves" and "retreat" skills combined with the staff's speed buff AOE, will have you running like a Mesmer.  Rotating between those three abilities will have you running with only a few seconds down-time.  It's a huge help when levelling up by map clearing the races home areas.

Hope this helps in some way.

My pleasure :)   As you progress past level 20 and feel it's time to start looking for a build that suits your personal style of play in WvW, there are a lot of us who will help you with that as well.

But until then, it's best to save your gold, because you won't need amazing gear and stats to level up in WvW (which up-scales you to 80 anyway), and the different races home areas are harmless.  The gear you'll get from drops will suffice.  Might as well salvage everything you don't use and build up your Luck/ Magic Find for better drops.
