I've just transferred to SOR from Northern Shiverpeaks and wanted to know what to expect in the big leagues. Im not that experienced so I hope Im not going to be dead meat. My biggest worry is level WVW is very casual, so Im not sure if Tier 1 will be a massive jump in skill and expectations.

Definitely check out the calendar located on your homepage for gaiscioch. Lots of groups that run WvW and people who are used to new players and casuals who love to teach. Tier 1 fighting may be different and it will be pretty brutal sometimes, but don't let it discourage you from playing parts of the game that make you happy.

you'll be fine I hadn't touched wvw until SoR got to tier one,  and well yes I got my ass handed to me a few times, but if u get to join in on small groups event u will learn tactics and strategies pretty fast,  most small group leaders enjoy showing new players the ropes  so feel free to ask questions....  i'm always up for some WvW now a days so if u see me online just yell at me i'll group up with you....  I usually run on my engy named Brogls...

Dallos, you be surprised to find there are actually not as many differences between tier 1 servers and tier 3 or 4 servers as you may have thought.  One of the prime differences between 1 and 4 is the level of coverage on the various battlegrounds on a 24 hour basis.  Tier 1 servers generally have greater depth of coverage than do the tier 4 servers.  A player decked out in PVT Exotic gear in teir 1 differs little from a player similarly equipped in tier 4.  The tactics are a little different, but that is something you will learn gradually.  Hammer trains here in Tier 1 are just a brutal as those in Tier 4, we may not approach the "train" all that differently, from the side and rear are the preferred for example.  I have noticed that lower tiers tend to try and run larger zergs, which is not always the best answer to a tactical problem. While one large zerg is taking an objective, the other team is running several smaller zergs gathering more points per tick, which is after all, how the game is won. This may be oversimplifying your answer and if it is please let me know.  Coordination is another point that may separate the lower rated servers.  Here we make maximum use of such tools as Raid CAll and Teamspeak voice communications.  By using voice coordination we can react more quickly, and affect the tide of close battles.

As other commanders have suggested run with the training groups that occur on a daily basis and you will find that WvW can be a lot of fun, as well as a challenging pastime.

Our commanders are great at teaching tactics - but each commander is different in their approach while some are very intense - others are more laid back - and then we have the ones in between the two.  You can learn from all of them - never get discouraged by what happens on the field of battle and never take anything personal with what is stated to the group in RC.  You can actually learn from all of them if you listen.

The biggest thing is to stay on the commander and take head to what they are saying.  They are attempting to keep you alive and win battles - sometimes it doesn't work out.  You might live but lose the battle.... you might die but the squad wins then encounter ... the entire squad might die or the best - everyone lives and the battle is also won.  Use it all as a learning experience.

Be flexible with your builds yet have fun!   The fun is the most important part but if you can play a class with a certain build the commander might need more - that's where the flexible part comes in.   So you might use a staff on your ele in lieu of scepter/focus.... you might have grenades slotted on your engy to help clear walls on keeps.... but most of all have FUN!

Almost forgot.... W E L C O M E ! ! !
