Hello,

So I recently upgraded to Windows 10, and then realized Movie Maker is no longer supported or functioning in Windows 10.   I used it mostly for trimming and minor editing of mp4 video clips.

Can anyone recommend a (free) video editor for Windows 10 that can handle mp4 video?

My Google Ninja skills turned up the following programs, but I don't know if they are any good:

Hitfilm 3 Express;  Lightworks;  Shotcut.  (yes, 'shotcut', not 'shortcut').

Thank you in advance for any suggestions/recommendations.

Garyc

Looking for one myself, I think there may be a new "Movie Maker" in the app store.

YA I was under the impression that with windows 10 all of the media/live applications got removed as .exe and became apps in the store that are not added by default.

Pookha,

That's what i thought too.

Howerver, check this link out:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/movie-maker-is-not-available-in-windows-10

There's no replacement.  Microsoft says go to the Windows 10 store and find a different app.   However, I can't find any app in the Windows 10 store that does video editing.

Am hoping for someone to come along and can recommend a video editing program that works in Windows 10.

Sadly, I may have to invest in <choke> an Apple computer.  As much as I'm not an Apple fan, at least all their computers come with a basic video editor.

Izzy,

WeVideo looks good.  Except, I only see an Android or IOS version.  I don't see Windows.

:)

Earlier tonight, I downloaded the program Hitfilm 3 Express.  When I imported my Mpeg video clip, it said I had to pay for an upgrade to use Mpeg.  So I crossed this program off my list.

Next, I tried the program Shotcut.  I had good results with this opensource program; , basic editing was easy to do. The encoding seemed slow, but it got the job done.

Tomorrow, I will try Wevideo to see how it compares to Shotcut.

Thanks again to you and everyone for helping me out.

Good morning,

Ok, I tried out Wevideo and VideoSoftDev Free Video Editor.  Below are my hands-on results.

Wevideo
- limited to 720p
- cloud based
- have to publish it first to a website before you are allowed to download it to your computer.

VideoSoftDev Free Video editor
- Looks the most similar to the old Windows Movie Maker
- However, it tried to install adware during installation

Later, I will try Lightworks; it looks to be similar to Shotcut, which I've been using the last few days without any issues.  I'm hoping Lightworks is faster in the encoding department.  Between Shotcut and Lightworks, I'll use the program that does a faster/better job of encoding.

In regards to Shotcut, I did download the 64 bit version, and wonder why the encode takes so long.  The old Windows Movie Maker was pretty fast when it encoded, and I'm certain it was 32 bit.

In contrast, I use 64 bit Handbrake to convert files, and it is amazingly fast (compared to the 32 bit version).

This will be the last post from me for today.

I downloaded Lightworks.  When I imported my video into Lightworks, it crashed my system.  My anti-virus program also freaked out about this program too.

I wasn't able to shut my computer down properly, and when I rebooted, Windows 10 automatically restored my computer to the last known safe point.  I lost all the work I had done.

Long story short, I'm going to re-download Shotcut and just use that program.

(Missing Windows 7 already).

EDIT:

In the process of trial and error of all these video programs, malware/adware infected my computer.   Long story short, I spent the last several hours doing a complete reinstall of Windows 10.  Sadly, I've lost all my files.  it wiped all my connected Hard Drives.

Now that I have a clean full install of Windows 10, I don't dare reinstall any of these video editing programs.
