It's time to change the brakes on my 2011 Mustang and I've run into a snag. I've changed the brakes on older cars before (this is the first time on my Mustang) and I'm discovering that brake piston is specially designed to require you to buy a new tool - a clamp like contraption that actually threads and presses the piston into the cylinder at the same time. This makes using a simple C-clamp impossible. I'm assuming anyone who works on Mustangs would recognize what I'm describing. Does anyone know if there are any tricks to using standard tools to get the piston depressed so I can fit it over the new brake pads?

Ah fords, got to love how many new tools are designed just for their cars. Unfortunately most of the time you have to get the special tool to get it to work. I have not worked on the new mustangs so I'm not sure what exactly you are talking about, but the way it sounds is that there is a locking mechanism in the caliper that needs to be pressed before the piston will compress. I know on some cars you actually have to mess with the computer to get the calipers to compress.

The piston is threaded, so it requires a tool wherein you press it in while simultaneously spinning it.My base auto hobby shop had one so I just rented out a lift and changed the brakes there. Probably saved me a whole lot of time anyway since I had pneumatic tools and the lift and saved some wear and tear on my back!
