Becoming Something More

By: Kadiskas

By the age of five Kadiskas was well versed in the vigil. Her father, Keveras, worked endlessly teaching her in the ways of both the vigil and in the art of war. She was tested to see if she was able to be a healer or a caster but to no avail. She was even tried to be stealthy like the rogue but again whatever she did she failed. Her father had her tested for many things hoping that she would not fall in his footsteps as a warrior.
But as the days went by she was always found in the blacksmith area, after the tests, watching the blacksmith with such fasination that her father could no longer ignore the fact that she was in fact going to be a warrior. He decided to start her as soon as possible.
By the age of six, Kadiskas was standing across from her father in a dueling ring. He had asked her there, given her a battered wooden sword and told her to stand ready. She didn't understand but mimicked his movements. She held the sword with both hands and waited. Suddenly, as if by shot by lightning she was on the ground, looking up at the sky. "Get up." her father said. With a slight grunt she stood. She knew better than to disobey. "Now when I come at you either step to one side or try to block my attack."
She nodded and he charged again. She sidestepped but found herself on her front side this time. Spitting dirt off her mouth she stood up again and looked at her dad. "I did as you said father why did I find myself on the ground again?" Keveras just turned and looked at his daughter and said almost so softly that she barely heard it. "Because you have to now be versed in the art of combat. You have not been chosen to be a caster or a healer or even a rogue, you have been chosen as a warrior as I am." With pain in his eyes he added, "I did not want this for you for warriors do not last long on the battlefield. But I will train you to the best of my ability so you will be wise about the choices you make as you go into the fray."
With a nod she looked at the sword in her hand, noticing that it almost felt as if it were just another part of her body. She had not felt anything like that in all the other tests. Looking back up at her father, a determined look in her eyes, she says, "Father I am ready." With that she places her battered wooden sword in both her hands again and takes her stance.
