Level 80... now what?

A common issue I have had in every MMO is that I get to max level and then abandon the character for a new leveling buddy.  I would prefer not to do this in GW2 since it precludes me from having a strong character, and can take part in fewer high level instances.

So now that I have 2 80's (Elementalist and Guardian) what do I do?  Do hero points grant me anything useful?  How do I acquire better gear?  I am not really into PvP, is WvW any different?  Does exploring the world give me anything other than achievements?

There's so much to say on this topic!   For starters I'd recommend reading through this excellent community guide:  https://docs.google.com/document/d/1BmVqFcrjVp-9G7MTFNovrBCgwTtC9NUi5HMPCcNvg-g

One thing I love, love, love about this guide is that it's organized by what you like to do.  Like a buffet, you can pick the things that interest you and ignore the rest.  I think it has up to date and thorough answers to your questions, but be sure to ask if there's something it doesn't answer for you.

Shmi's guide is pretty comprehensive, and should provide a great deal to think about. I can't do better than that, there.

You indicated that starting an alt would preclude you from "having a strong character." I tend to disagree with that. You don't need max armor in this game in order to participate in any of the level 80 areas. Rare gear (yellow) works just fine, although exotic (gold) would be better. Except for weapons, I have not thought much about chasing ascended gear. the ascended I have is from drops, only. You can also obtain gear through dungeon badges.

Hero points, right now, allow you to unlock skills and traits. I have all unlocked on all of my toons, even the skills and traits I don't use. When HoT is released, those hero points will be used in a similar manner for masteries.

Shmi's guide has a section on gearing up. FOr my part, I bought rares from the TP to find out what I liked, before investing karma into temple armor, before leveling up crafting to make my own gear. WvW badges can also be used to purchase armor. I would caution against placing any expensive runes on either badge or temple (karma) armor as you can not salvage those armors.

PvP is different from WvW in GW2. WvW is player versus player, but much more organized than something like a WoW PvP server, but much more chaotic than structured (5v5) PvP in an arena. I was never much for PvP myself, but I still find WvW enjoyable. You should give it a try, just to see. GSCH holds several WvW events each week. Just let the Commander know that you are not experienced, and they will try to explain a little more than normal.

Exploring the world opens up way points to access world boss fights, guild events (there is an event tonight), jumping puzzles, etc. If you achieve map completion, you are rewarded with crafting material that is used to create a legendary weapon. For my part, I have world completion on one toon, and somewhere between 40-60% completion on the rest.

Oh, and, have you found the Silver Wastes, yet?

The guide is extremely helpful Lakshmi, thank you!

Cyvil, since I don't know what the silver wastes are, I would say no.  I did sometime ago purchase an exotic armor set with karma for my guardian in Orr, so it sounds like she is decently geared for most things.  I just got my Elementalist to 80 so I will definitely take your suggestions on gearing her up.  I have been hesitant to spend too much gold, not knowing what to buy.

Sounds like WvW is worth trying out at least, I was never a fan of WoW PVP and that is most of my past experience with pvp.

I'll see if I can make the guild event tonight, that sounds like fun.

Thanks for all the help!

Really hate to necro this thread, but the guide Shmi posted above is destroyed. Would anyone happen to have the original doc they could link? It sounds like it would be very useful to me =)

The guide was pre Heart of Thorns so a lot has changed. This reddit post has a pretty good (but long) write up with a handful of links to other sources of information.

Its not as neat and buffetish as the old one but it might do the trick:

Take a look at Fractals.  There are a number of guild members who do these on a regular basis.  Kitty runs an event for players who are new to Fractals.

The guild has several WvW events during the week so you can check for those.  Both the elementalist and guardian are good classes for WvW.  I play a Dagger/Warhorn  Tempest similar to the one shown in this build:  http://metabattle.com/wiki/Build:Tempest_-_Midline_Auramancer.  WvW is group combat so you will be fighting other players.

If you have the Heart of Thorns expansion, you may want to do the specialization collections for the special ascended weapons.   For elementalist:  https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/The_North_Wind_(achievement) and for the guardian https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Ydalir_(achievement).  I've done both and guarantee these will keep you busy!
