How to craft a legendary weapon - a guide

No, not my guide.  ;)  A guide to crafting just one of the legendary greatswords -- Sunrise -- popped up in a Reddit thread today (click image to see bigger version).  Reading the Reddit thread, it looks like a LOT of work/mats/gold to get a legendary.  For the other legendary greatsword -- Twilight -- another person posted a guide in document form.

@Avengel Yeah, no kidding. Some folks have what I think of as "mountain climber" personalities. What's important is to get something that few can attain, and get it first if at all possible. That's definitely not me, but to each their own so I'm glad these are in the game. :)

Holy Hell... That is insane on getting a Legendary weapon. Dual Pistols??? Oh boy :)

I have now seen the true face of insanity. I count at least 500 Orichalcum Ingots in there, each requiring multiple Orichalcum Ore to create. 250 Globs of Ectoplasm, which you can only get a chance of receiving from salvaging rare/exotic gear. 250 of every rare trophy in the game - each of which is a pretty rare drop in high demand for crafting basic exotic gear (although that Mystic Clover recipe might make this easier). 500 Badges from killing players in WvWvW, and 500 of a specific Dungeon currency. 525,000 Karma. 200 Skill Points (daunting, but compared to above, a stroll in the park). The biggest time and energy sink though looks to be that Mystic Clover. You need 77, and each attempt to get a chance of making 10 of them eats up an additional 21,000 Karma, 10 Mystic Coins, 10 Ectoplasm, and 6 Skill Points on top of the above. There's no shortage of long term dedication involved here. Makes me curious how quickly we could possibly see these things turning up... though a dedicated guild working together might just do it relatively quickly.

Some have called me crazy, but I think I will be trying to obtain multiple legendary items... It's a veeeeryyy long term goal.. but since this game will be around for a while.. why not?

I think the skill points required are going to be the real grind. Every 2 levels past 80 will get you 1 skill point. Dual wield both weapon load outs = almost 2000 levels past 80. This will be the biggest time consumer of the whole process.

Wow, this is nuts. The gap between getting most of the endgame gear (T3, dungeon, etc.) and this is huge. I don't think any recent non-asiatic MMOs have a grind that comes close.

And honestly, the stats are barely 5% better (if that) than the exotic base item. It's almost completely a cosmetic status symbol.

I might have this by the time I go gray! Oh shoot, I already have plenty of white hair mixed in! ;D Seriously, this might be accomplished in the long term for me, but then again possibly not because I have yet to WvW. ::chuckles:: I've been having too much fun exploring and crafting mostly with a few story level dungeon runs in CM to give a group their 5th. I do plan on doing more, just timing again for when people were looking for groups. =)

Lol Bri Thank for posting this Lakshmi, it takes a pretty convoluted process and condenses into a mind-blowing amount of work. I think we found the real end-game, eh?

Peral there is one legendary for every weapon type except greatsword where there is two legendaries (which can be combined into a cooler legendary). I'm tempted to go for a legendary but i am yet to work myself up to it. Although i should probably decide on a weapon type that I like first.

I'm one of those nuts that will have to find the recipe for a legendary bow and see if I can make that happen eventually. Good times, good times.

did some quick math. If you straight up and bought all the mats that you could (and you can't buy them all) it will roughly be 500g on a good day. this doesn't count the weeks that you would need to spend grinding wvw and karma. so ya... GOOD luck and props to the first one to get a legendary lol.

Actually, WvWvW doesn't seem to be much of a grind. I've barely been out in WvWvW over the last month (something I hope to remedy soon) and am already looking at well over 100 Badges of Honour in my vault. WvWvW so far is looking to be the least grindy part of the whole equation.

For anyone looking to attempt to craft the base weapons needed for a legendary. This week would seem to be the perfect opportunity. We are gaining a massive lead in WvWvW which (as of this post) is granting a 15% chance of crafting critical success. By the end of the match this bonus will probably be the highest we'll see it for quite a long while. Personally, I doubt I will be in a position to take advantage myself, but it's given me something to strive for this week.

Also, for those of you throwing stuff into the Mystic Forge to try to produce Legendary precursor weapons: a poster over at guildwars2guru.com verified that you can substitute a Mystic Forge Stone for one of the rares people usually throw in (two different people posted that they put 3 rare weapons and a Mystic Forge Stone into the Forge and received a legendary precursor weapon).
