Good lore videos to watch to learn the history of Tyria before Roleplaying

This one discusses the world and continent of Tyria (two separate entities with the same name).

This one discusses the fall of Ascalon.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X2nznISDkwk&feature=player_embedded

Discusses the 5 "main" heros of GW1.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KhNHe_J-rSM&list=PL00553A085339802C&index=3&feature=plpp_video

Discusses the Chosen part of the Prophecies storyline.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WnriRbcISjM&feature=autoplay&list=PL00553A085339802C&playnext=1

Here's the GW2 Guru thread that talks about both videos.  Hopefully the author will make more.  Both were easy to watch and understand.

EDIT: Added two more lore videos.

Great stuff - thanks. For someone that didn't play GW1 I needed this history lesson. It really filled in some blanks - ahh who am I kidding - my whole mind was blank regarding GW's. The extinction of the dwarves (how sad), the elder dragons, the other races that we will encounter - the other lands we might get to visit in future expansions - as well as their races (and I'm still sad about the dwarves - I like dwarves). Anyway, that was great stuff for me - I feel more connected to the game now.

One thing I finally realized today was the Big bad guy behind EVERYTHING in GW1 was the former human god, Abaddon. Didn't realize until now he was behind the Searing, the Cataclzym, the Jade Wind, and Varesh's take over of Elona. So basically EVERYTHING that went wrong, went wrong because he controlled key evil figures as well as the Titans. -More Spoilers- Once the human Kormir took Abaddon's place, the six human gods were restored, but it does beg the question, where did they go in the last 250 years? Was it because the Dragons are waking that they left, scared? Or did they leave to prepare and come back? Or did they know they weren't as strong as the dragons and gave up? It's very interesting to realize that GW1 the main bad guy was a twisted human god and now in GW2, it's the Dragons that are the main enemy. But in GW1 players didn't know for a long time who the true enemy was. Are the Dragons just the minions of some one else? Is there another evil puppet master behind everything?

I can glean information from a written page MUCH faster than I can from a video... to the point I get bored with videos and don't finish them. :) I know, that makes me the exact opposite of nearly everyone else in existence, but there you have it. ;-) I don't suppose this information is available in written format? Closest I could find is this: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Lore which BEGINS by saying how incompete it is (not especially encouraging). ;-) I'm not a heavy role-player, but I do like to know at least a bit about the game world... if only to keep from spoiling the fun of those who ARE heavy role-players. :-D EDIT: Tried adding BBCode to make link active (been awhile since I've used BBCode ;-) )

http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL00553A085339802C Above is the link for the playlist for the videos (on the Guildwars2guru thread) by wooden potatoes. Anyway, very interesting. I actually want to play GW1 after hearing all the lore about it lol. Can't wait for GW2! Edited to correct typo :)

Conveying lore by exposition ends up being dry, like a bad history lecture. I've failed to find the GW books locally. Are they readable/enjoyable?

The two books out now are ok. Not exactly literary gold mines, but are fairly good for lore understanding. "Edge of Destiny" and "Ghosts of Ascalon" are the two I know of. "Edge of Destiny" was published most recently but all the events there in actually happen BEFORE "Ghosts of Ascalon." "Ghosts of Ascalon" is the much better book, but again these are works of literary art. That being said, if you were to read "Edge of Destiny" first, more would make sense in "Ghosts of Ascalon" since some of the major characters in "Edge of Destiny" show up in "Ghosts of Ascalon."

Thanks for finding these - I've not played much of the first Guild Wars, so these are REALLY useful for understanding and catching up on the lore.
