Not sure how many of you have or haven't played this or even know about it but I thought I'd pop and and just let everyone know that's pretty much where I've been since I left ESO/GW2.  It only just popped on to my radar in July and most of my peers had never even heard of it despite being fans of dungeons and dragons.

For the roleplayers of the family, it is an amazing game for hosting live Dungeon Mastered games, and while it's not as authentic as virtual table top software, it does bridge the gap between a top down/iso RPG and the virtual table top software.  The gameplay itself is not as detailed as previous Dungeons and Dragons titles and the module creation toolsets are not as fleshed out as former D&D titles like Neverwinter or Neverwinter Nights, but even taking that into account I've spent nearly 400 hours in the game since it launched in October.

  • It has a single player campaign that is roughly 40 hours of game play which is relatively family friendly (no cussing, but the usual RPG killing for exp)
  • Multiplayer features for up to 1-4 players and one Dungeon Master.
  • Random Dungeon Crawl feature where you can build your own procedural generated Dungeon.  You can make up to 10 dungeon levels of various size and complexity from 8 tile sets, three major quest types (collection, killing, boss kill)
  • Combat is similar to MMORPGs with skill trees and action bar cooldowns (which was a major complaint from D&D players).
  • Toolset for creating modules - I would consider this still a work in progress, you can make a full adventure, but they are still adding features and things like area transitions and branching dialogue are set to drop around xmas/new year.
  • Most of the game is modifiable with the exception of the .dll and .exe files.  There is a small but dedicated modding community and they have good support from the developers.

If you can get past the idea that it's not true D&D and didn't have the budget or development cycle of the older, bigger titles like Neverwinter Nights or Baldur's Gate, you might find a fun, quirky dungeon crawler for under $40.  I was very hesitant of the game myself originally but found myself pleasantly surprised at what I got for what I spent.

I'm hoping they build in more of the suggestions from myself and others for DMs.  Once that happens, then I will look at making more stuff (I did a little short module aimed at our livestream, and it is available for play once the social system comes up!)

We had an awesome stream of epic adventure with this one. Once things settle down a bit i want to take another romp in this one.

I really enjoyed the campaign but found the module creation tools lacking in functionality, they were really easy to use which was great but they were just missing a lot of things that I consider standard that should not have launched without.  Most of which is being added on a monthly basis with their community updates which is great.  A small studio that is dedicated to continue support on a game they love working on at no cost to the consumer is more than most games are willing to give these days.

Yeah, and once they have in some deeper conversation options I'll probably work up a new campaign for people who want to play it... but getting people to read all the clues via world interactables is just painful at best.

Yeah, apart from the dialogue branching and tile-by-tile placement, the main things I'm waiting for before I really get into publishing modules is area transitions and invisible triggers.

I aim to create modules for solo/coop players that don't have time for scheduled events with dungeon masters, most of the issues I have with the toolset can be overcome with a live DM and I've actually had a good tabletop simulation session with Dungeon Masters, but I don't have the time to be able to make weekly or even fortnightly events myself.  There are plenty of people like me out there as well so I hope to create modules to keep them interested once the tools I need become available.

Just a heads up, there is a free play weekend for Sword Coast Legends on Steam this weekend and the game is also on sale.

If you're interested in the game but aren't sure if it's worth the money, now is the time; play for free and decide for yourself.

Looks like they are pushing CP3 back bit to focus on the Rage of Demons DLC. No estimate on the CP3 upgrade items.

Added to wishlist.

I love these dungeon crawlers. If there was an announcement for Baldur's Gate the MMO, I think I would break down in tears of joy.
