Interesting... Guard now requires a shield on PTS.

in every other game ive ever played that had guard always required a shield war was the first that didnt

Wait... What? Guard didn't require a shield?

Lol Stoat! I always just assumed you couldn't guard without the shield and never tried to apply it. So I'm guessing the official forums are going to be full of I quit posts, should make for some good reading this morning. For the record, I support this change.

I'm not a fan of this change. Having a dps style tank duo'd with a dps class such as a WH or Slayer was fantastic. This will eliminate that option. I'm sure Korzak and Hellreike won't like to see this. Granted you can do a decent amount of damage if spec'd and geared right with a 1h/shield, but it's not the same.

Swordmaster's are supposed to be 2h tanks. Without guard we will not be wanted in WB or groups. Our utility is crap.

I would be surprised if this change made it to live as is. I don't think it was an accident that this got floated in this early with no real official type announcement. I imagine they are testing the waters without commiting to anything. I suspect once the build nears completion we'll see some hybrid like 25% damage reduction from guard if you have a two-hander. People will still grumble, but not as much as if they had presented the nerf at 25% right off the bat because they'll think "well at least they gave me 25%". Or maybe I'm giving Mythic too much credit.

I'm one who hated this change. Guarding with a shield should be made more efficient, not mandatory

The funny thing is tbh I doubt most tanks will go back to s/b even if this change goes live so for soft targets the TTK will get even shorter which will be hilarious. And yes the most potent melee duo for order 2h Ib and slayer will be hurting. but ppl will adapt and power groups will end up with a 2h tank and a s/b KOB whose job is to buff/debuff and roatate guard. Really, and its been said for a long time now, a shield should give the full 50% mitigation and 2h should be half that if not as low as say 15% mitigation. Really all non aura tanks are getting hamstringed by this change as guard was the main form of utility they brought. SMs would be getting the worst of this as to be frank their S/B abiltes are weak. The majority of tank classes in game have more utilty in 2h form than S/B with active abilites as well as the threat of dps. Alot of non tank classes are cheering now but when the majority of those tanks say screw it and dont put on the shield QQ about TTK will sky rocket yet again. On the plus side maybe as an IB my oath friend buffs might actually get noticed as a help.

dont freak out over guard yet, it's a proposed change they're mearly gathering data and feedback right now. I doubt this patch is anywhere near live ready.

Well they caved on the guard change. While I do believe that guard in its current form needs to be looked at the over simplfied guard needs shield is not the way to go. Also I think most of the outspokeness over the change was more to the fact that they never once mentioned anything it was just in there as an aside. And for such a drastic change to a basline archtype defining ability it should have been talked about more, they would have saved some headaches on their end.
