Cold-Blooded Killers: The Sharks of Northrend

We began our travels in Northrend at Valiance Keep, the main landing area for ships leaving Stormwind for the frozen north. I brought along Rascal-Bot to be my photographer, and although the cold has caused some problems with his joints and his gear, he's done a great job. Here I am, scanning the horizon, gazing northeast toward an area where sharks are known to lurk. You can see a ship from Stormwind just arriving into port, the beam from the Farshire lighthouse piercing the freezing gloom, and the aurora borealis which are so bright they can even be seen by day!

I headed out of port on my trusty carpet, Rascal-Bot balancing precariously alongside me. We were both scanning the water, looking for signs of the great beasts lurking beneath. And soon we spotted some, just where the friendly fisherman in Valiance Keep had said they would be, near an old wreck just off shore. We approached cautiously and beheld the beast, a Great Reef Shark.

The coloration on this beauty is simply amazing, something between mulberry and puce. And look at the size of that dorsal fin. What a monster! We swam in for a closer look...

And quickly decided that we had possibly pushed our luck a little too far. We got out of there quick. I wouldn't be a very good host, would I, if I were shark meat!

On our way out of the area, we stumbled on this funny fellow, who seemed to be looking for something in the wreckage. I can only imagine that pole thing he's carrying is for checking sand depths or possibly prying open crates of sunken goods, although he waved it at me in a rather unfriendly manner.

We left him to his treasure hunting and returned to Valiance Keep for a well-earned cup of honeymint tea. I don't think I'll ever develop a taste for seal whey.

Our next stop was the quaint fishing village of Moa'ki Harbor. I positioned Rascal-Bot on the bluffs above so he could get this amazing shot of me hovering above. And of the village buildings and the great turtle boat, of course. Believe me, you should travel by turtle at least once, folks; put it on your bucket list!

Speaking of buckets - CHUM buckets that is - (haha!) we need to get into that water and hunt down some sharks! But first, let's say hello to one of the friendly locals.

These walrus-folk call themselves Kalu'ak, and they certainly seem to be well-adapted to this harsh environment. Layers of blubber insulate them from the intense cold, and they are as warm and friendly in personality as the weather is cold and forbidding. "Visit again when you can!" is a typical Kalu'ak farewell that one might hear when leaving on a long trip or simply popping down the street for a cup of pungent seal whey.

They are also dedicated fisherfolk and they had many stories about the denizens of these waters. I was quite intrigued by their reports of the local sharks and determined to take a closer look.

For the Kalu'ak, fishing is serious business.

Right below this massive hook we found a Moa'ki Bottom Thresher. Just a lovely shade of brown, and look at those teeth! Just amazing! And, you will note, this specimen is, in fact, swimming near the bottom, as one would expect.

Mission accomplished, we retired to the local inn for ... more honeymint tea. Apparently there is mead available, since they basted their caribou with it, but I couldn't get the innkeeper to sell me any. These Kalu'ak and their charming ways!

Next we flew over the short coastline of Grizzly Hills and entered the waters of Howling Fjord. We were now in search of the elusive Daggercap Hammerhead, which is found almost exclusively in the inland cove near the Alliance base at Valgarde.

The seaward approach to Valgarde is through a narrow fjord whose mouth is surrounded by icebergs that are home to large flocks of fjord penguins. Here you can see Rascal-Bot making friends.

You can also see a huge burning ship suspended over the fjord. We took the carpet up there for a closer look. I think it must be some sort of public art installation.

Just around the bend is the Alliance base, Valgarde. Utgarde Keep looms over the scene in this photo.

That's Valgarde in the foreground and you can see the ship from Menethil Harbor coming into port. This outpost is constantly under attack from hostile Kvaldir but we decided to land and soak up some of the local flavor.

Down at the docks, we can see the sharks circling already! They even break the surface with their fins as they troll the water for their prey.

Look at the size of these magnificent creatures!

We wanted to get an even closer look:

But that might have been a little too close!! I'm not too proud to say that we beat a hasty retreat. Happily, the inn in Valgarde serves something besides honeymint tea. Caraway burnwine, anyone?

Frankly, I love the time spent.  Watch out for that Gnome on the bar.  I think he's had a little too much to drink. *mumbles something about dancing*
