News from: MMORPG.com

In my last column I asked a rather heated question, is ESO Dying? This is a question I get asked a lot during my livestreaming sessions. Another question I get asked is going to be the focus of this column. Is The Elder Scrolls Online worth buying?

"If you’re the type of player that wants to rush to end game content in a matter of days or weeks, you’re going to find yourself at end game saying there is no content to do."

BOOM. Hit the nail right on the head. It takes all types to make a game, but sometimes I think certain folks are unwilling to accept that. They might think their way is the only way, or *should* be the only way.

I hope a month or so after they get the console release out the door they put the game on sale. I'm sure they will and that should give the game a bit of a cash infusion. Their marketing group still has a lot of fuel to burn.

"End game content" is a subjective term for a MMO anyways.

In my opinion, AvA is the end game content for ESO.  And I don't think you can ever run out of AvA content unless there is nobody to fight.

However, if you're not into PvP and want end game raiding instead, then I can see where you would run out of content rather quickly since there isn't any traditional raid type dungeon in ESO.  Yes I know they have the Trials, but those were completed within hours of release where most raid dungeons required weeks if not months of progression before you finished them.

This is a common problem with every MMO that comes out though.  Rift had plenty of end game raiding content right after release, but it failed to deliver much of any type of end game PvP content.  It's impossible to provide enough content for every type of playstyle.

That being said, I think the negative connotations attached to people who "rush to level" or "rush to end game content" are unfair.  I liken leveling to running a marathon.  Some people find it a challenge to get there as fast as they can.  Others run at a slower pace and take more time to enjoy the scenery.  Now if you are ones of those who want to finish quickly, you can't really complain afterwards that the race was too short.  But there isn't anything inherently wrong in leveling fast.  Different strokes for different folks.

Bentmer, I absolutely agree with you, but all too often it's those rushing to max level who are complaining about how "bad" the game is. Not fair to those who don't complain, but then it never is. ;)

I`ve never rushed to endgame in any MMO i`ve played , i was lvl 45 when Kunark came out at the time max lvl was 50 and Kunark raised it to 60 .  I didn`t hit lvl 60 for atleast 8 months .

Endgame raiding no longer intrest me after having done that for years , although a lot still like it .

They need to have a better game overall , PVE quest leveling, and PVP  leveling as a alternative to just doing Quests where you can level just as effectivly as you can outside of AVA  as in AVA .

Add something for the pvers to raid to keep them busy , and add something like Darkness Falls or Land of the Dead  tombs etc for pvpers .

Thats some of the things i miss from DAOC and Warhammer that this game is lacking , more diverse leveling choices and fun pvp options

Well -

First, I agree with what Bentmar stated...

Second, It does take all types to make a game successful - PvP, PvE, max levelers, slow levelers, raiders, quest hounds, and grinders simply because they all buy the game and spend time in it for their reasons.  But, every game is not built for everyone and I have doubts that it ever will be - it is just so much to put into a single game especially when you start looking at character customizations, targeting systems, looting, etc.   There will always be something missing that someone wants - or needs - for them to really like a game.

Third, ESO is listening to the comments and if they can make adjustments they are at least working on them - such as the increased exp gain from AvA kills - it was tweaked once and they are giving it another upgrade in the next couple of months and their changes to the Vet ranks.  I was only a Vet for about a week when they did their adjustment on exp. gain from questing and mob killing in the other zones you travel to as a vet and saw a huge change to the amount of exp I was getting.  And - they are still adjusting it.

Fourth - if someone wanted to ask me if ESO was worth buying - I would tell them what the game means to me, how things work - and what things I still think need work - and say "For me, the answer is 'yes', but after what I have told you - you need to decide for yourself if it sounds like a game for you."

... and Finally, I know I had thoughts about experiencing the game before the Family did.  After playing it for a couple of days I had second thoughts but I stuck with it - and the longer I played it the more I liked it.  At this moment it is my favorite game - it is an explorer's/quest hound's wonderland of sites, sounds, hidden treasures, secluded grottos, and stories that are as interesting as any other that I have been a part of.  This, is not for every one - however, it is for me.

Not right now.  I'm sorry, but this game should not be for sale right now.  It is *not* the game that I bought, I don't know what they're doing to it, but they break more than they fix, and then break parts of the game that they shouldn't even be messing with.

I suspect it might have something to do with trying to port the game to Xbox One and PS4, but I don't know.  There's just no other logical reason that I can think of, as to why they messed with the lighting system, audio and whatever else they managed to bork with that last patch.  It was already a beautiful game, with fantastic audio and it was soooo smooth and ran great for me.  Now?  I'm lucky if I can function in a fight.  I just want the game that I bought back.  :\

Its like putting lipstick on a pig... why did they do it?

I whole heartedly agree with Morigana, "At this moment it is my favorite game - it is an explorer's/quest hound's wonderland of sites, sounds, hidden treasures, secluded grottos, and stories that are as interesting as any other that I have been a part of.  This, is not for every one - however, it is for me."

And also, "There will always be something missing that someone wants - or needs - for them to really like a game."

For me the only thing is that so much of the content is solo.

This helps the racers run and the single players feel at home but, for a true MMORPG it's lacking the group experience.

Now it's true that two can have a great time together and enjoy the game as a small group as my wife and I do. But, we often say, 'gee what about asking in guild for folks to join us' and then say, 'but it's silly to group with more people' for this quest or that quest.

Then you get to a 4 person dungeon and you feel funny asking for help when you just spent a month only chatting but never playing with anyone.

Small groups of friends can explore and adventure a duo at a time but past that only the 4 person dungeons work and they are short & fast compared to other past MMO's.

I run with a Saturday night group of six in the soon to close game Vanguard. We have become close friends from all over the world and plan to continue our groups small guild Saturday night Explorers group but, while two of us play ESO already, we just don't feel we can be here with the same quest adventuring and exploring that we spend the leading week planning for our Saturday night run.

Anywho....

That's my 2cp worth...

Thanks!

Tuz
