Just wondering if there is any story or reason for the name, or if someone just thought it sounded cool. Thanks.

Just wondering if there is any story or reason for the name, or if someone just thought it sounded cool. Thanks.
I believe it was originally Echoes of Van'adiel after the world from FFXI. Correct me if i'm wrong
Not that actually. Through the storyline, you will understand why the Free Company is named "Echoes".
I asked Hex the same thing when the game launched. Play the storyline and you'll see :) No spoilers!
Ah, thanks for the spoiler free explanation. Can't wait.
Oops, I stand corrected, I'm going to have to pay close attention to the story. Thanks for not spoiling!
From the list of possible FC names that was posted (by Gibsauce, iirc) it was decided that people liked the short version of "Echoes of Van'adiel", that being Echoes, which wound up with the most votes. I originally hated the name because it was so "generic" and I felt that it had no relationship to the game, so I was rather... "vocal" about it. ;)
The story-line deal is just a happy coincidence, which once I'd discovered it, actually caused me to love the name. :)
My initial feeling echoed that of Sekkerhund's! At first I didn't like it at all, but as I got into the story line, I have come to feel that it is perfect.
As a few have already touched on, yes, it was the shorthand version of one of the names I came up with back when we were deciding what to call the FC.
For that particular name, "Echoes of Vana'diel," the concept was that it was a play on the themes of both game worlds (since in many ways, FFXIV is the spiritual successor to FFXI, to me).
For example:
Etc., etc., you get the point.
So to me, experiencing constant nods to the fun I had in Vana'diel within Eorzea, was like experiencing, well, Echoes of Vana'diel!
I knew not everyone played, or liked XI though.
So I also wanted it to be inviting to both those that played/enjoyed XI, as well as those that had already experienced some of, or were excited for, XIV's story.
If you so much as made a character and went through the initial cutscene/tutorial segment of 1.0, you should be somewhat familiar with "the Echo," regardless of whether or not you understand what it was, or now is.
I knew "the Echo" was an important part of XIV 1.0's storyline after playing it for a few months (it was not a coincidence), but at the time, I did not know it would be as significant as it has proven to be now in 2.0.
I also didn't think that name would be picked for anything, as I figured most members would feel it was too corny. :P
As for why it was shortened to simply, "Echoes:"
Connor (and the rest of the officers at the time), agreed that the naming conventions should be set, such that the proposed names would not be long-winded (we were fielding open suggestions for the name).
On my original name list, I made mention that I decided to include certain long names (like the aforementioned, Echoes of Vana'diel), along with the short ones, simply to spark some creativity in others, as I didn't see many suggestions being made.
I remember Hex and a few others didn't like the "of Vana'diel" part, but enjoyed the "Echoes" bit, so it ended up being nominated as just that.
And, if I remember correctly (I believe the thread has since been deleted), it came down to three choices, and Echoes ended up winning.
And I'm glad it did, after experiencing so much of story.
:]
Fun fact: I thought "Mogstomp" was going to win! c_C
Fun fact 2: Most of the names on my original list had ties to XI.
Fun fact 3: Our in-game tag is "ECHO", because we didn't want to run around with the misspelled, "Echos" next to our name (there is a 5 character limit).
Fun fact 4: Exactly one month after we created our FC, another group of players created an FC with the tag "Echo" on our server.
Yea, looked for the thread, didn't find it. I don't trust my memory, I often eat a few toes if I rely on it. So its not a "happy coincidence"? Bah, that takes some of the mystic sparkle out of it.
Yeah, same Sekkerhund - couldn't find it.
I kept my original list though.
Here it is, in case anyone wants to laugh at how terrible some of these were:
Noobbue....
XD
LOL Mogstomp <3
I think I recall writing up a compelling lore-based argument (at least in my mind) as to why Mogstomp would make a great name for a FFXIV FC. I was also thinking in terms of Gaiscioch > Irish > British Isle traditions > Clog dancing > Clogstomp > Mogstomp.
Echoes turned out to be the better choice. :)
Mogstomp was purely a play on words of the Silverchair album entitled Frogstomp, which Gib and I both own :)
hm, well crap. As I was saying about my memory... but I know I recall associating Mogstomp as I described, which was why *I* liked it, but now that I think about it, I believe it was another of those names that I made a lore-based argument about. Was it Gigaflare? I don't like that one, so can't imagine why, but hmm, maybe Mijin Gakure... bah, I don't remember, doesn't really matter I guess, heh.
I loved your take on Mogstomp Sekk, I now think of a Moogle riverdancing in giant clogs!
Mogstomp[Stomp] is still a lovely pun.

Actually being one of the 3 people who started the FC in beta 4, Echoes of Van'adiel (according to Connor at time of creation) was too long so it was shortened to just Echos for Beta 4. It was later changed to Echoes after launch because people complained they didn't like it looking like it was misspelled (for Beta 4).

There was a lot more discussion and thought that went into it between officers. Gibsauce's version is correct :) Shmi and I changed the short tag to ECHO as we did not want to look like a bunch of illiterates, and I capitalized it when I created the FC, to make us stand out in the levelling crowds!
The all-caps decision has been much appreciated since that other FC chose the same tag as us last month. :P
Really, another guild is called Echoes, or something a little different? I've thought that I've seen [Echo] tags while running around, not many, I definitely run into more [ECHO]. I thought it was just a glitch or something in our guild tag.
Yep, "Echoes of Chaos" on our server chose the tag "Echo."
There are actually quite a few FC's with the same, or similar name (not hard to believe :P ).
The one on our server formed exactly one month after we formed ours.
Do we have the lock on the all-caps then, or can another guild use an identical tag? When I'm on my unguilded alts, I run across ECHO tags ... well, not often but actually its not uncommon. I assume its one of ours, but wondering now. lol
Funny thing about that is, people will think were some massive presence, when infact its a lot of little branches :D
I am pretty sure we are the only all-caps one. yay for other people promoting our name though!
@Hex
For beta 4, I was an officer (at the time of creation since I was also a founding member) and leading events while you guys were playing on a completely different server ;)
I do think my memory isn't all that bad lolMe, Connor and some of the other Beta 4 founding members were in raidcall talking as the guild was created ;)
But, in any case, the past is the past and what you guys do with your guild is completely up to you as I do not play with you.

Saren: I was referring to discussions I had with Gibsause and other officers as we were planning and forming the fc. From memory, you were not involved in the discussions at the time, that I had with Connor and Gibsauce. You certainly were not involved in the many discussions I had on my own with Gibsauce about the name off raidcall.
Sure, you may have invited a few folks in phase 4, when everyone was split up and we were all waiting to meet up on Excalibur, and I am in no way disputing that. Although as far as who 'founded' the guild I'd lay that claim firmly with Connor, followed by myself.
Like you say you are not involved in our FC, so I am not entirely sure what the point of this is. There is nothing incorrect at all in what Gibsauce posted, so I was simply agreeing with what he said.
TLDR edit: Someone asked about the name, Gibsauce explained, it only really concerns our active members.
I'm not sure why I even bothered posting. Have fun.
