Awesome TV shows

I just wanted to point a giant red arrow at 3 fantastic TV series that may have slipped past some of The Family's radar. All are historical dramas, very violent (sex, nudity, blood, gore--hey, it was the Times of Yore. Waddya expect?)

First is:

A 20th Century woman finds herself 200+ years in the past in 17th century Scotland. The time-travel aspect is down-played. This is mostly a romance. Has the MOST HATED villain I have seen in any--ANY--movie or TV program. Jonathan "Black Jack" Randall  (You will hate him more than Archibald Cunningham from "Rob Roy". Yeah.)

Second is:

Pirates of the Caribbean--GoT style!  This ain't no Johnny Depp thing.  Bloody.  Fantastic story telling!

Last is:

All I can say is they got a camera, a ring of invisibility and a fookin time machine! That's the only way I can accept how real this looks.  (And someone put a Babble Fish in my ear while I slept for the language.) Hands down the most amazing female protagonist ever, ever EVER!

Lagertha

You will start a female Nord after you see her one time.  I did.

If you have not seen these shows, do it! Movies are dead (except Mad Max).  TV is where it's at, my friends.

(Books are still good, too. Especially mine, available --I hope--in a few months)

Watched every season of Vikings - it is pretty awesome and they do so much right and very little wrong.  Finally a show that portrays women in a culture the way it really it vs. the typical macho crap that only has men at war.

Little known fact - in the American Indian culture, men who didn't want to fight were left back in the village to cook, make the camps, and help raise the children and women who wanted to hunt were sent out on the hunts. Neither were shamed. It wasn't until the "white" man came and ridiculed their "way" that they thought of it as wrong and made changes in an attempt to "fit" in.   The "white" man taught the Indian so many bad things - especially the French and English.  (Nothing against my current French and English friends)   Much like the Viking culture except the Vikings typically laughed at them as their women fought better than most the men they faced.   Big thumps up to the Shield Maidens!

Safe Journey.

I 2nd Black Sails, stupidly good and very much a gritty pirate show. If you haven't seen it yet, Daredevil the Series is also a brilliant piece of work.

Sadly I never had a chance to watch Vikings (waiting for it to come to Netflix) but I've heard nothing but good things about it.

If you meet yourself on the testing track, don't make eye contact. Lab boys tell me that'll wipe out time. Entirely.

I'm listening to the audio books for the Outlander series while at work, will have to check that out. I've heard Black Sails is good and it is on my watch list.

I've actually been thinking of watching all three of those at some point.  Of course a lot depends on my mood when watching and as a general rule I don't like to watch tv shows with a lot of tragedy in them -- I'm too sensitive.  Something bad happening to a character I like can get me depressed for a week.  I'd never survive watching Game of Thrones :)

Gwynhefar, Outlander is your show. As far as I can remember (no spoilers) none of the primes are killed off. (There was one episode with a witch that will give you nightmares, but just hit yourself on the head with a large blunt object until you forget it.  The episode is awesome and worth the trauma.)
