I was thinking desktop not laptop but I may have to consider one of those.
i bought a HP pavillion core i5 for like $800 and spent $200 on a new video card. But just shop around for deals. Focus on processor and ram. Everything else is cheap and easy to upgrade. Actually RAM isnt that hard to upgrade and is fairly cheep too >_>
Yeah RAM is dirt cheap these days. I have looked at several systems that meet my price point. Problem i have is which processor. So many more options now.
Does component brand matter? You can build a pretty nice system if you go AMD and for under your budget with a quad core and good video card 8 -16 gigs of ram. I just priced out a pc for f a friend for about 650-700 shipped another 100 for windows 7 and your set, Note my friend is not gamer and went with low end video card . I will email you a cart from newegg.com. SO keep an eye out for an email from Jaiteck1@gamil.com. You can change out items right on the link. SO if you prefer nvidia to ati you can remove the card i listed and what ever else suits you. I have used most of the parts listed for other peoples pcs, snd have owned all the brands i selected and i trust them. Let me know what you think.
PC
3.6g amd quad core
990fx motherboard
16 gigs dd3 pc1600
ATI 6870 2g
500g hard drive
antec case and psu
windows 7 64
dvd rom
total about $975 shipped

Check out the "Setup of the Month" that MMO-Champion posted just this past Sunday. They break it down by components, core system and peripherals, an AMD & Intel setup, as well as a median and high-end machine.

if you can build your own i would build this: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/core-i5-overclock-performance-gaming,3097.html since my husband built me my first custom-built machine, i've never looked back. i'm now running very close to their Dec performance machine and it's sweet. with this second machine, i actually helped my husband build it. and my hardware phobia went poof. if you buy the parts in newegg - check out their videos on how to build a system. it's not rocket science. plug-and-play. not bad at all. never going back to HP-dell-etc. *and* best of all - you save 1/3 - 1/2 on price. i could never have affording my new system from a gaming computer company. cheers
