GW 2, *Thief*

I was thinking, what's the thief's role in say a castle defense? As a fragile melee profession what would they do when their castle/keep/tower thing is under siege?
I don't want it to be like WAR where mainly the melee professions were at a huge disadvantage compared to the raged profs.

Can't decide between Thief and Ranger hehe

Edit: Does anyone know if ANet will allow mods and such?

There really aren't any 'fragile' classes in GW2, aside from armor types.(Heavy, light, and cloth) Considering every class can heal themselves, offer support, dps, and to some extents even tank. Every class can use ranged weapons/skills to the same efficiency as other classes. So a thief could go pistols and be as effective as a ranger with a bow. To put it in better perspective, a ranger can use melee weapons and be an effective melee DPS. Heck, I plan to run my warrior with a rifle/bow quite often, as even a warrior is very effective with range weapons. Each weapon has it's own skill set, so if a class can use it, they can use it and be good with it.(Provided the player is as well) Thief would offer a number of options for defense and siege situations, much like every other class this game has at their disposal. If GW2 lives up to the claims, there will be no class at a real disadvantage from the others in any given situation. I think the best example of this I saw was when ANet team took a party of nothing but rangers through an entire dungeon successfully.

From the sounds of it reading over the classes theres going to be plenty to do no matter what class you play. It's just going to be really interesting to see how it all flushes out.

i like the idea of a norn thief. just on appearance alone. it's going to be a huge change for me not being a main healz in gw2 when it hits. i am trying to prep by working on my cleric tanking in rift - to get used to being a damage type of toon. somehow thieves and pvp seem to go together. they were OP in WoW, less so in Rift pvp. wonder how it will go in GW2? i think one plays their favorite type - because @ class gets its shot at the nerf bat as developers work on balance.

From the little pvp I did, thieves are still the great ambush on defence. Got to love a guard you cant see and can stun and cripple. Back in the old days of WSG in WOW, I remember my Defence partner a ambushing rouge and me as a snipering huter :)

Wow, Sothogaram, that was a good post and I think you helped me make my final decision, thiieffffff. I cant wait to play this game, looks great and hopefully plays great too. Anyone know ANet's stance on mods? Are they more on the side of say Blizzard, letting players use almost anything such as damage meters click to cast healing etc., or are they more on the side of say EA/Mythic with only basic UI mods and very little click to cast?

On the topic of mods, what I have heard is that they plan to provide a fully functional UI that can be scaled, but can not have elements moved and can not be modded.

Yea, they probably won't bother with mods as there own UI is well done, and very customizable

To answer the original question as if you plan to play the thief as the cloak and dagger assassin class. Like in Warhammer, you should be out ganking the stragglers of the enemy on route to key locations in pairs. But as mentioned this is quite a different class system so anything is really possible.

There is no doubt in mind that I will be playing a theif and trying my best to make it work in all situations. But, and it is a big But to keep in mind, this is not a sneak around in stealth class. Their stealth has been taken down from 30 secs, to 10 sec, and now all the way down to 4-6 sec. That being said you can link a few stealth skills together and maybe get 11 secs out of it. It looks like stealth is more for getting in and out of a fight real fast not. I was a little bummed about this but I will still love the class...i hope.

Ill probably play both thief and ranger. If ranger has an option to specialize more towards running solo with no pet ill have a really tough decision on my hands. :(

From what I have read, and it isn't a lot, the Ranger as it stands is VERY reliant on its pet. It is almost as important as an offhand weapon. So many skills are tied to the pet. I too would be much more in favor of the Ranger if you didn't have to have a pet.

Ranger needs its pet and won't function without it. If you don't want to deal with it, ranger certainly isn't for you. I'm more of a fan of thief myself than ranger for melee burst.

Yeah ranger is no longer on my list of classes I might roll as a main. Sadly I saw the Mesmer Yogscast and now I have an even harder decision. Thief for burst and possibly short bow for siege defense, or Mesmer for awesome stuff and portals. The portals part sounds so awesome......Anyone know if Mesmer relies heavily on minions? I know that they are very useful but I mean long term minions like a pet, not like the ones you get from casting a spell that have low health pools and are just a nuisance, I have no problem with those. Just cant be bothered to play my class to full potential while worrying about a pet, for some reason it never works for me hehe.

I'll be playing mesmer and engineer myself. I like support classes the most - I don't really see offheals as being support, and that's one pet peeve about rift that I have, no true support role that is USEFUL except for archon (only in raids) and bard kinda.
