Which profession are you leaning towards?

In the last B/W I spent most of my time trying as many professions as possible to just get an idea of how combat felt. I wasn't able to try them all so this weekend I'll be focusing on the those I haven't. But between the beta events I have spent all my time looking at tons of videos and getting other folks opinions about the varios professions. I will admit I am leaning very heavy on the Guardian profession. I have always enjoyed playing a strong support role. The idea of being able to only deal some decent damage and provide buffs/support for my fellow groupmates has always made me feel more contributing. 

So let me know what profession your leaning towards and why? I always enjoy getting different points-of-views.

My suggestion is to choose a profession that fits your preferred play style rather than how its skill set is configured at launch. The programmers do their best to "balance" the professions but major tweaks are certain to happen leading to either "nerfing" the profession that is currently in vogue or buffing a currently underpowered one. GW2 is trying to break the "holy trinity" mold so all professions are capable of providing "support". With all that said, if you like up-close, in-your-face combat then warrior or guardian. Up-close and slippery, thief. If gadgetry is your thing, engineer. Are you subject to loneliness and like to keep your distance, ranger. If slinging fireballs and creating tornadoes suit you more, elementalist. Maybe you live on the dark side and like to fool around with dead things, necromancer. And lastly, if you are more into creating confusion and illusions, mesmer. If you are like me, you will be playing GW2 for a few years in which case you will eventually have one (or more) of each.

I'm currently leaning towards the Warrior, mainly because of its class mechanic. I usually find myself wanting some sort of big OOMPH ability to finally finish off a target and when I played the Thief I didn't find that the class really had that mechanic there. I think the closest it had was the double dagger heartseeker ability that did more damage the more wounded your target was. But I think the Warrior might be just a little more robust in that regard.

I'm leaning towards Mesmer, but Ranger and Elementalist sound fun too. :)

I'm planning on playing a Ranger to 80 and then a warrior to 80 as well, but my main will be a ranger.

i was initially hell-bent on playing the charr engineer but it's a bit too fantasy for me so i have decided to go with a human mesmer for a more rift-like real-worldish battles :P but an asura guardian does sound fun because i like to annoy the heck out of opponents with a small stature :P honestly, i'll probably choose after this BWE CYALL ON SANCTUM OF RALL! ROARRR

I like firing guns and setting things on fire. I like being short, non-attractive and hopefully overweight. I love to tinker with stuff and will try to discover EVERYTHING. So Asura engineer :)

Norn Mesmer all the way as my first toon (probably my main) :) How many slots per account do we get at lauch? Anyone know? Mesmer, Elementalist, Ranger, Necro, Engineer, Thief, Guardian....I basically want one of everything. Warrior being last choice. Can't wait for this weekend's beta!!

I will probably be playing a Sylvari necromancer as my first toon ( I also have a few rp ideas for this toon but thats another topic in itself). I will eventually like to try all the professions on for size and hopefully will not have to expand beyond the five character slots.

at this moment, i'm thinking i will have a necro main w/ the name of Roxanol Malle; and a ranger crafting alt named Delamar Malle. i will be trying not to be an alt-aholic w/ GW2. we'll see how that works. *grin*

You get five character slots at start and can purchase more through the Gem store. The gem store is Anets in game cash shop. I think I was reading some where that it will come out to about $10 per character slot if one decides to purchase more slots.

Originally I was really excited to play a mesmer - and I did a bit during BWE1. However, I tried to log in that Saturday and, for some reason, was unable to use my mesmer. So, instead, I created an elementalist and simply cannot get enough of that profession! I've always been attracted to magic casters in any game I've played but the elementalist, for me, is just so much better than any other caster class I've played before. I love how we can switch attunements during a fight (with a short cooldown) so I can blast the enemy with fire one second, stun them with freezing cold the next and splash the area with a healing rain right after. They are just amazing! I haven't given up on the mesmer though and would like to get to know them better during BWE3 but I have to say, each second that draws closer to the server opening up only makes me want to make another elementalist! I'm trying to resist, really I am but I'm not very strong. So, you will probably see me with an elementalist afterall! One thing I will try out for sure are the sylvari and asura races! At least I'll do something new! :) Myk

Support (Full healing / buffing) / Pet ranger to start. He will be my crafting farmer. I have heard that properly specced ranger pets can tank better than anything else in the game and I want to be able to sick my pet on a veteran and then gather a guarded node before running. After that I plan on either making support warrior / guardian or dps elementalist as my mains.

Thanks RustedCrown for the info :) I know I will be expanding from the 5 for sure. I have 11 slots on my eq2 account. I will definitely have 8 slots (then I can try out all the classes :) ).

Hey RustedCrown where did you get that info from? I was trying to find out how much the items would be in the cash shop. I'm planning to purchase gems in the beta.

I will make a Sylvari Gaurdian as my main and will be working on a thief or engineer to see how they have update the professions for this bwe

After playing an Engineer in WAR... then a Rifle Rogue in Rift... Yep, I can't resist going for an Engineer all over again. But at least this time for once it won't be a Dwarf - I'm leaning towards Charr for all those skin colour and pattern options... and the big horns.

Here is the info about the gem store it came off of GW2 guru's forums. Please keep in mind that it's not something official (to the best of my knowledge) but should give a baseline of what we can expect. human mesmer and maybe later i play bit around with the engi wich seemed fun ele is too easy for my taste

I intend to play an Asura Engineer. I like the versatility the engineer presents. However, I still immensely enjoy the thief as a WvW Scout. So it's probable I will have a Thief Alt.

Will try for an engineer and a ranger, maybe a guardian. So far the choices for race is charr, norn, and possibly sylvari. Will see how this weekend goes.

This is my 1st beta event so I hope to try as many as I can:). I'm thinking about a human elementalist and an Acura engineer to start...but we'll see how it goes. I am always surprised by the class I end up playing (and loving) in an MMO. Asura that is...darn autocorrect.

Well, I was very surprised to find that I really enjoyed the necro! The other prof's were fun as well. I think part of it is just adjusting to the very different play style. Actually having to move, and dodge makes quite a difference. By the way, you can go into PVP (Enter the Mists) and play around with high end builds. That way, you know exactly what you are getting into.

Pre BWE 1, I was certain my main would be a Charr mesmer. GW1 I was a mesmer and loved it. In all other MMO's to date I have always played a dwarf and prior to joining Gaiscioch in WAR I was in an all dwarf guild that spanned multiple games (shout out to Warfield and Stone and Steel) so I was dead set against the Asura on principle. I had decided they were the race that killed dwarfs for GW2, so they were out! (I know this isn't true, but in my brain, I had it all worked out that the Asura were the villains and scapegoats.) Then BWE 2 came around and I discovered the engineer class. My Charr mesmer was slowly becoming a Charr Engineer with a mesmer in the back up position. I tried nearly all the other professions and also started feeling the necromancer. I was anti- warrior, thief and ranger after trying them and didn't even pick up the elementalist. It was looking like 1. Engineer 2. Mesmer 3. Guardian. I figured I'd have one from every group. Enter BWE 3. Oh man. Big trouble. Played Engineer. Asuran Engineer. BAM! Done. Put it in the bank. BLASPHEMY!!! I'm a dwarf fan. I hate all things non-dwarf. The Asura are a mockery of fantasy dwarfs! Ugly little Lilo and Stitch Disney rejects! But something about the way they are written, the way their starting area and lore is brought to life in GW2 sucked me in. So much so, I rolled three other Asuran characters and a Sylvari Mesmer to try out over the course of the weekend. Okay: Sylvari are cool looking. Character creation is top notch. But just as my Dwarf fondness over 20 years of gaming has caused me both dis- trust and like of Elves, something about the Sylvari turn me off. Damned dirty Asura!! I'm chalking it up, partly, to the fact that I think I'm coming to terms with the fact that as much as I love my GW1 mesmer, the GW2 variety just doesn't play the same...and the cool looking Weirwood inspired white Sylvari with red leafy hair and red bio-glow couldn't turn me around this BWE. I want to love the mesmer again almost as much as I want to hate the Asura. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. So Asuran Engineer is in the one spot. I gave the guardian and necro another spin each (only to lvl 11) and was sort of warming to both of them. So I thought in fairness, I should give the Warrior another whirl and since I hadn't even bothered in two BWEs, I should at least whip up an elementalist (though I had ZERO interest in playing one. Ever.) And then it happened. Stupid Asuran warrior was crazy fun in PvE. Like the most fun I've had runnin' around in a video game in a long time fun. I could shoot stuff, I could stab stuff, I could smash stuff... and all the while looking like some cross between an ancient Mayan and the aliens responsible for their extinct civilization. I liked it so much my list started looking like. 1. Engineer (Asuran.) 2. Warrior ((A) Asuran, (B) Norn, (C) Charr)...thinking I need to experience a different personal story line I should deviate from Asuran. 3. Scholar class - ((A) Mesmer, (B) Necro. Yeah, you know where this is going. Stupid Elementalist. Just as much fun as the warrior, but completely different. Where the warrior switches weapon combos, the elementalist swaps attunements. Wanna be up in someone's grill with the ele? Go for it. Wanna stand back and nuke. Knock yourself out. Support? Yes, please. So to sum up this novella and to answer the original query: BWE1 1. Charr Mesmer 2. Norn Guardian 3. Sylvari Necromancer 4. TBD 5. TBD POST BWE3: 1. Asuran Engineer 2. Asuran Warrior 3. Gods help me... could be an Asuran Elementalist. 4. TBD 5. TBD

see the sig =p I will be making a warrior and thief, classes were way too cool not to have an alt. I do plan on filling all char slots just for potential pack space.

For the longest time I've known that I would play an Asura, but have been torn whether to be a necromancer or an engineer, both wonderfully satiating my appetite for mass summoning aid and cool additional features. One beta weekend later and I'm proud to say my Asura will be an engineer. Typically I'm not big on Alt characters, so that's probably all I'll play, but just in case, I think Sylvari necromancer will be second.

Over the course of my mmo history I usually only played one or maybe two characters tops. Now coming out of the third and final beta weekend I can see my self having all my charcter slots filled, with the possibility of buying three more slots. To start the game though I will most likely roll a Norn Elementalist. This will be subject to change as I explore more aspects of the game (RP, PvP).

Asura Ele- main Asura War- 1st alt Sylvari Necro- 2nd alt Sylvari Guard- 3rd alt

Thief. I always play those sort of classes in MMOs.

Well so far 4 of my 5 slots are "full": Human Elementalist, Human Mesmer, Charr Engineer, Sylvari Ranger. I'm an altoholic so I will have all 5 full. I'm leaning to my Human Elementalist being my main.

I like all the races. Interested in all their storylines. This weekend I played a human thief and wow, it was a lot of fun. So, I will have 8 slots right after launch. I will have one of every class and one of each race, the question is.... which races I will repeat. Rolling at launch: Norn Mesmer Human Thief Sylvari Ranger Asura Engineer ?? Necromancer ?? Elementalist Charr Guardian ?? Warrior First two are set in stone, not likely to change but after that the race/class combos are up in the air. It's really based on which storylines I really get interested in doing. Thinking about reading some of the lore hoping I can get some ideas which paths I want to go when creating my toons.

First up will be a Warrior. Still not decided on race. Love the human starting area, but I don't like the Human city, racial gear or story (lol). After the warrior is 80 and pretty buttoned down, I feel certain some alts will come. So far necro, guardian and ele look quite appealing to me. Charr seems to have GREAT racial skills for WvW, so one will be a charr for sure. Choices choices!

First a Mesmer Second Warrior

Asuran Engineer (Main) Charr Mesmer (2nd Main) Sylvari Elementalist (Alt) TBD TBD

I managed to try out every class, every race, and every weapon for all of them during the beta weekends. My breakdown is that I've really connected with the Asura and Charr races, and the Guardian and Engineer classes. So I expect I'll make one of each.

I am definantly going to be an Asura Warrior, although I will start in the human area because I know it so well. I plan on completing all starting zones with my Warrior before i move on. This way, i will have a sizable level buffer before i move into the higher zones. I did this with my Human Warrior this beta event but I only completed 3 and I was level 22. It's fast, easy, and most definantly fun.

I think I'll be going with a Charr Thief. I found myself enjoying the Engineer far more than I expected to though so that might be my second character. So many good options!

Norn Warrior (going to build him to be as defensive and healy as possible...think Warrior Priest of Warhammer Online)

Warrior (probably norn or human). Most likely I will make a defensive gun / hammer / shout build. My secondary characters will be guardian, ranger and elementalist. After that I am not sure!

I am guessing that my first class will be either a Ranger (my favorite type of class to game with) or Guardian. It will depend on what hubby picks as his first character's class though. This will be the first time that we will get to crank up a game on the first day and explore from the very beginning together at the same level. Usually it was him trying out the game (and getting levels) then me deciding to join a game much later. With my being retired now I get to be there for the very first minutes of a game with him. So excited! =)

Sylvari will be my race for sure, as for my profession...It will either be an elementalist or a necromancer. I'm leaning towards necromancer but honestly I could suddenly decide elementalist again at any moment before release :P

I was sure i was going necromancer, but then i played the game and realize I like the elementalist because of the versatility. I want a character class that can do a bit of everything. On the downside, this game has a high skillcap and I had trouble with mobs once I hit the late teens.

after talking w/ bloodymaw, i changed my mind. i'll try ele as my main. my main focus will be on wvw and ele may be useful for that. :)

All of them... lol sadly that's more then likely whats going to happen with me.(Provided they sell extra character slots.) This last beta weekend I truly tried to nail down what I was going with for a main character. However I ended up walking away from the weekend loving all the classes play style. I think in WvW I enjoyed playing the Engineer the most. It's not at all the most powerful class on the battle field but it is a lot of fun to play. Even when I found myself in single combat and lost, I was having a lot of fun. As far as pve content there wasn't a class I didn't enjoy. Race of characters is no doubt going to be Asura for most of my characters. I really love those pint sized, ego-maniacs. My plan thus far for characters are as follows. * Invader Timm - Asura Engineer. "Twist those knobs!! Pull some levers!! MWA HA HA ha ha!!" * Oldman Jenkinz - Norn maybe Asura Guardian. * Asura Necromancer. * Asura Ranger. Pink bird pet named Kevin. (from the movie UP lol) * Asura Thief. (Little ninja comes to mind.) * Charr Warrior. * Sylvari Mesmer. * Human Elementist.

This is how my list will go, not going to start a second character until my #1 is maxed out 1: Asura Warrior 2: Norn Guardian 3: Char Engineer 4: Human Necromancer

I like to play a long-range shooter who slows and immobilizes enemies while continually making distance. A kiter, if you will. Usually, that leads me to play the hunter/ranger/archer type. The Guild Wars 2 Ranger is actually not really in that category at all, and I really did not like the feel of the Ranger Longbow. Then I discovered that Warriors can use ranged weapons. The Warrior Rifle is a perfect fit for me - Cripple and a Knockback. I've already used it on an Asura and was extremely happy with it, I could make plenty of distance from my enemies. I don't ever plan to be in melee range, so my 2nd weapon of choice is the Longbow. It offers a pin down skill, which I can use pre-swap, and it also covers the AoE niche. This is even pretty useful for WvW, since ranged weapons are a bit favored there. My 2nd profession, mostly for WvW, will be a defensive-reviving-healing concentrated Scepter Guardian. I found having a lot of defensibility useful in WvW for activities such as repairing gates, walls; manning siege weapons, reviving people, and someone has to initiate a battle. The Scepter is great because it's a ranged weapon, and Smite is incredibly useful to attack people on walls since it basically forces them to either move or get hit. Immobilize is always welcome in WvW, as well. Usually I took a Shield with it, and a Greatsword on swap, but I'm fairly undecided on those. Taking a lot of Stability and Retaliation skills for situations where I, say, have to rush into a keep that's under enemy fire. Also taking a lot of traits that promote reviving or otherwise defending allies. And 3rd would be a Dagger-Dagger/Shortbow Thief concentrated in backstabbing and going into stealth a lot, mostly for sPvP. Shortbow is pretty good and has a lot of potential for keep defense, though, and there's always room for stealth tactics. As for races: Charr Warrior Norn Guardian Sylvari Thief

I've played around with all the races and favor them in this order. 1. Asura - Love the animations, the lore and the TUDE! 2. Charr 3. Norn 4. Sylvari 5. Human Classes that I've played I've enjoyed. 1. Engineer - Love em 2. Guardian - Very durable - much better than the warrior IMHO 3. Necro - There's a cool factor there 4. Ranger - Sorta meh 5. Elementalist - A lot of flexibility but I'm not really a pure caster type 7. Warrior - I felt they were pretty weak Haven't played thief yet. Asura Engineer will be my first and main.

I like all the races but I am planning on doing the following: 1.) Main character - Asura Engineer (I am not typically a support role player, been a dps rogue in most all the MMO's I've played since EQ1, but I love the toys they get and how useful they are to a group/raid in WvWvW). 2.) Alt character - Charr Warrior (pure carnage at its best, loved playing it in BW3 with everyone)

Mykhayla, Human Thief - tried out the thief during BWE3 and really enjoyed it! Keira, Sylvari Elementalist - this will be my main toon Sylvari Mesmer - tried this one out during BWE3 also and loved it! Asura Engineer - flame thrower in a small package? Who could resist??? Asura Ranger - how cute will they be being so much smaller than their pets? Not sure of all the names yet, a lot depends on how fast I can get in the game and get my preferred names once the server opens.

I am leaning towards Guardian, I'm not sure what race yet, maybe Norn.
