I am new to gw2, I am really excited about the game and can't wait for when it comes out. My question is what would be a good first time starter character? As far as a race I am leaning toward a norm but undecided on the class. What would be a good class for a norm that would be easy to role play.

For a Roleplaying norn? I'd say Norn Hunter then since their all about the hunting of the things.

race is mostly decided on what you like lore-wise or what you think is cool, so Norn is as good as any other race. As for class, if you're looking for a class purely based on what makes the most sense in the lore, than hunter and warrior are the two best choices hands down (though I've seen some good arguments for engineer), as the norn culture centers around being remembered for their legendary deeds in battle and being honored by their animal gods Both classes are relatively easy to play and role play in these respects, but which one of the two you'll just have to determine based on what playstyle suits you more (read: run up and smack with giant weapon or using arrows, traps and beasts) From there, depending on what effort you've put in for your char's backstory and/or personality, the roleplaying should fall into place.

"Ranger" is good. Thief, warrior, guardian, elementalist, and mesmer fit the ethos pretty well, imo, too. I think you can learn the basics of any profession pretty quickly, but some are more gimmicky than others. Ranger does good melee and bow, and the pets fit with the Norn. The Norn starting area and stories feel nicely immersive - it's coherent and the early PVE stuff will take you through content that includes a lot of lore.

Hi Twisted! The Norn are a proud race who enjoy life to the fullest and love to hunt. They were driven out of their homeland when the Ice Dragon awoke and now call the ShiverPeak Mountains home. If you haven't already, you can read more about them here: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Norn I think a Norn Ranger would be a perfect blend of race and profession. But each of the above suggested professions would be great for a Norn and if you want to read a bit more about each one, check out this page: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Profession See you in-game soon!

I am most likely going to create a Norn Warrior for my first character (even though the male norn voice bugs me). One of the main reasons that I plan on rolling Norn instead of human is that I plan on doing cooking with my first character and the idea of a huge Norn in a cooking outfit is amusing. I think most classes fit with Norn if you are creative. Rangers, Warriors, Guardians, Engineers and Rogues are like Hunters. Necromancer, Elementalist and Mesmer are like Shaman.

I agree with the sentiments about which classes fit the Norn here. In fact most professions do fit with each race - one more thing I love about GW2. I would like to add that since you are new to GW2, you will notice that the PVE content is a little harder than most other MMO's. Sometimes when you pull more than one or two mobs, you could be in real danger of going down. Because of this, I would suggest Ranger to start with. They come with durable pets that will occupy one mob by themselves while you take out the others. This doesn't trivialize the PVE mobs, but it does make it easier.

This might help. The Norn follow four animal spirits that they revere. When you create a Norn character you are asked which you are a follower of. The different spirits represent various qualities, and you can use that to make any class fit with their culture. (taken from the official wiki page) The Bear represents fortitude and self-reliance and is said to be the mightiest of all the animal spirits in the norn culture. The Raven represents cunning, trickery, and knowledge and is the animal spirit of the norn that is associated with the Underworld and the spirits of the dead. The Wolf represents the virtues of loyalty, ferocity, and strength in numbers and is often invoked for help in tracking the Norn's prey. Finally, the Snow Leopard represents independence, strategy, and laughter in the face of danger and is considered to be stealthy and solitary. You could make pretty much any class fit with the spirit you choose through your own interpretation. Good hunting (from a future Norn warrior)

Each race can also represent a kid from high school: Asura: that super smart kid that loves to tell folks about he's super smart Human: the underdog jock that always seems to make a come back Norn: very big into hunting, drinking, and boasting Charr: loves the military, if Iron Legion also loves blowing things up, if Ash, likes being sneaky, if Blood, also loves martial arts/hand to hand fighting Sylvari: that smart kid that loves to learn just for the sake of learning, sometimes is also fairly naive

I am really torn between the Norn and the Sylvari - I will probably go Norn just because it fits my personal mythos the best even though they may not seem to be big into elementalism I think I can make a good case for them being so in touch with nature that is is natural for them to control it abd with healing rain and some of the other abilities I can just as easyly call it shamanism. What I really learned from the last BWE was I truly love elementalism :) and I truly love the Norn more than any other race. So yeah - you can pretty much make a case for any race - any profession.

Lol love the way you put it Vamp! I can only imagine an Asura being a engineer since they are such tinkerers. I think for me character making will be one of the hard things, so many choices! I'm such an altaholic :)
