Hello I have had my macbook pro for about 4 years now and I feel like its time to get a new one. I have narrowed it down to then Macbook Air 13inch and the Macbook Pro 13inch retina.

Macbook Air specs(1349$):

  • 1.7GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.3GHz
  • 8GB 1600MHz LPDDR3 SDRAM
  • 128GB Flash Storage

Macbook Pro retina specs(1399$):

  • 2.4GHz Dual-core Intel Core i5, Turbo Boost up to 2.9GHz
  • 8GB 1600MHz DDR3L SDRAM
  • 128GB PCIe-based Flash Storage

Both around the same price as you can see. I would like to know if the Macbook Pro's processor is better than the Air's. Also welcome to any suggestions.

Thank you

~Jake

It depends - The retina display is definitively nice, so if you are going to do a lot of on-screen work, you might like it - On the other hand, I find 13" a bit small for my taste. If you are mostly going to hook up the machine to a large monitor for desktop work, then it does not matter.

The difference between i5 and i7 processors is in the number of cores and the handling of hyperthreading - When looking for gaming CPU, the most prominent factor performance wise would be the clock speed since most games do not benefit from multiple cores and/or hyperthreading. Though you will not notice much of a difference in performance between the 2 CPUs, the i7 grants you a slightly higher clock speed and a larger level 3 cache (8mb vs 6mb). This should translate at best ~5 FPS more versus the i5.

I would make my decision on the display if I were you - and it is probably worth going to a store somewhere and compare. If you are doing image/video editing with a desktop monitor, then I would take the i7 since Final Cut Pro and most Adobe softwares take advantage of multiple cores and hyperthreading... You did say "New laptop for work" did you ;-)
