So, anyone here had a chance to face the new Tequatl encounter yet? How was the experience? From what I've been reading, there are already a lot of people complaining that the event is too hard, and I imagine that it's because they simply tried to zerg it as usual.

Is there interest in making organized groups within the guild to try to beat the event?

Bout time that a game puts something "HARD" in it. The best memories come by beating that which others could not. I am so freaking sick and tiered of games caving in to easy mode whiners. If they want to play a kids game go play free realms. I prefer my games difficult, challenging, and epic. There is NOTHING epic about standing in 1 place and autoattacking a boss creature to death. That's more what we call a "Chore". Die a hundred deaths at the foot of Tequatl and then when and if you ever kill him I guarantee you, you will remember that experience. I still remember killing Cuuldurach the Glimmer King after 2 years of leading every month to attempt to kill him. There's no better feeling that overcoming something that hands you your butt time and time again.

Totally agree with you. As frustrating as it could be trying to organize 40 people to work together, beating those vanilla dungeons on WoW was some one the most rewarding stuff I ever did on MMOs, so the idea of having to get 100+ people together to try to beat content like Tequatl is very, very cool IMHO.

I imagine we'll need to go there and get our behinds kicked a couple of times before we get a full understanding of the event, but I imagine we'll need to specify groups to tackle each part of the event, like 5-men groups that do nothing but handle hylek turrets, others that handle the mobs that spawn constantly, and so on.

I really hope this renewed encounter requires a lot of organization. The concept of something that can be joined by any player in the world, but requires a group of people that know what they are doing is very appealing to me. This could be a big deal for Guild Wars.

Don't worry the Great Tyrian Adventure Season 3 will be dragon based again :)

It requires teamwork on a massive scale and from what I gather most people have been going into the fight with the same #1 spamming mindset they've always had. It's a fight meant for 80 people min and what they don't understand is if you have 80 on the field and 70 of those are downed or dead you aren't going to be beating much of anything. I also don't think the realize that not everyone can just run up and bash Teq, you need people on turrets, people guarding turrets, people killing fingers/wall...

Personally I'm stoaked that the new Teq is hard. It should be. If you guys ever organize something that I can hit count me in for sure :)

I might try and get us late night runners together thursday and see if we can kill us a dragon!

The timers on the rest of the bosses are a nice change of pace too. NOw thinking and stratagey is needed.

I never was on a successful DAoC dragon raid. I went after Cuuldurach (yes... I had to go check the spelling...) over and over... with as few as 20 people, and as many as 150... Never did kill that sucker, but we had some fantastic fights.  I hope the new hard-core Tequatl will up the community drive and determination, and not just scare everyone out of the zone.

I think it's a bit early to say it's too difficult, but I'm worried it may require too much coordination to expect from an open world pve map. I've been on the main map for three teq events today and it takes a TON of dps just to get him down to 75% even if everyone is doing their job. I think it would be amazing content for an instance of organized groups or a guild.

what bothers me the most is that it's very easy for just a few people to take over the turrets and either intentionally or unintentionally cause an entire server to fail. And there's nothing the rest can really do to stop them other than leaving the operators to die or the turrets to be destroyed and pray you can make up the lost time once the turrets are repaired.

Thora, if you have been on these events, a question: how many times did the bone wall got up, ballpark?

As for needing extraordinarily high dps - I doubt that's the case since the turrents not only put out an armor penetration on the boss but throw out buffs for people to increase their dps pretty high.  It just requires people on the turrents that really know what they're doing.

@Kemwer: I saw it go up once or twice in the very first event I participated in. I don't remember seeing it up after that in the maps I was in.

Jandus: yeah, I'm guessing perhaps the only/most effective way to beat him is to have the turret manners using #2 when possible and throwing down buffs for the zerg in between. Although having the shell stacks as low as possible actually doesn't increase the damage done to him, as a dev stated on the forums (https://forum-en.guildwars2.com/forum/livingworld/tequatl/Tequatl-s-scale-damage-reduction). I'm guessing that's what you meant by the armor penetration. Having the buff below 20 stacks just prevents him from going invulnerable and the bone wall from popping up. The buff is going to be what gives people the dps they need to complete it. Like most people I'm still learning how to work the mechanics of the event.

edited to add: apparently our 'friends' BG were able to beat him earlier! According to this poster their main tactic other than knowledgeable turret users was to pour on the dps and abandon to mega laser batteries when they were 10-15% away from charged in favor of getting in more dps during his vulnerable phase.  http://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/1mmcb9/blackgate_did_it/

The event is very challenging but i like it that way. I tried 5 times first day and they all failed. I am interested.

Thanks,

The event is challenging yet I found it very fun. I'm very happy to see some challenging content introduced to the game. Also, congrats to Blackgate and their commanders in having the world first kill of Tequatl the Sunless post-re-design.

Video of Blackgate's world first kill, unedited.

And the same video slightly edited and with commentary about the strategy used.

From everything I've been reading it seems to me at least that the difficulty doesn't necessarily come from the battle itself but from those involved.  It requires a massive amount of coordination and communication among a population you have no control over.  You cannot control the skill level or willingness to follow directions of those who choose to show up and there is apparently little room for error.  Those two factors combined can create an extremely difficult experience.  I don't think it's beyond the abilities of the Gaiscioch family to organize events to succeed.  Although it remains to be seen how long such a difficult boss encounter so heavily dependent on factors outside the control of the individual draws enough interest.
