Scary times :(

I want to apologise for my absence of late...

I have been working on a marathon project (designing a new High School) since last August. Everyone on my team have been working 60+ hours per week for the duration (skipping most holidays as well)... It came in over budget in February, requiring a major redesign - and a continuation of our work marathon.

We finished the project again, and the plans went out for Contractor to bid it on Monday. On Tuesday, our entire team was laid off (including one of the partners), with me being the sole survivor of the cuts. This is actually the fifth wave of layoffs that our firm has had over the last two years.

Tenebrae and I are still in shock.  I was actually out of the office when the lay-offs occured , so I heard about it from my friends as they were being laid off. Tuesday night, one of the senior partners called me at home and said "I know rumors travel fast, and I wanted to let you know that your job is secure for now."

Scary times :( 

i am thankful to hear you survived the layoff. i can understand how scary it can be. hang in there!!!

Glad to hear you made the cut, do know that no matter what Stoat & Tenebrae we have your back. :) I have no problem in helping people find work. All I need is a resume and a target position and i can unleash the hounds to see whats out there. Stay safe guys we miss you both and hope to see you soon.

Was there a reason why they got out the chopping block and just went a choppin?

Yeah, the reason is that our office doesn't have enough design work for us to do. I work for an architectural firm, and there just isn't enough construction going on in the area to keep us all busy. I'm not sure how I survived the cut - but I still have my job for now. Thanks for the kind words and support :)

Glad you did not get chopped, but maybe they kept you as the grunt to check designs and the few new things going on.

Glad to hear your still working. I'm a Superintendent for a construction company and man, it has been a hell ride for the last two years. I was even off work for about 4 months, 2 months after my daughter was born last July. Things have been slowly picking up for us here in Cali but I don't think it will ever be back to what it was for the construction industry.

My bro-in-law is an architect, partner w/ his firm, and down to 1 day per week (20%). They mostly do public buildings, so the tax shortfalls last few years have decimated their work.

I also work in construction, large GC, as a construction manager and you are right times are hard. I will say that in So Cal there is a lot of potential for things to pick up. So I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Glad to hear you still have a job! Seems as if the province in Canada that I live in is the polar opposite of the situation down there. We've got a lot of construction going on all over the map.

Failte Stoat!! Good to see your name around again Lad. You knew me as Fin (Findoir) in Armyn on both DAoC and WAR. Glad to hear you passed the cut. Everything is scary in every state when it comes to employment. I wasn't so lucky. Been out looking for work since March and still haven't found anything yet. I'm just hoping for the best. Hail Fin! Believe it or not, I have been thinking of you a lot lately! I've been listening to the audiobook of the Silmarillion (over and over), and evertime I hear Finrod or Fingolfin... Guess who pops to mind :)
