Are there any old Neverwinter Nights veterans?

http://www.playneverwinter.com/

I was just wondering if there are any folks that dug into Neverwinter back in the day. I was a late bloomer into the gaming scene as I gave inordinate amounts of my time to Conagra Foods and Tyson Foods for a decade. The original Neverwinter Nights and Dungeon Siege II are what brought me into gaming when my health plunged like the global stock markets of late. Neverwinter Nights 2 came along from Obsidian and while I played the campaign and first expansion I was still disappointed in the departure from the original in many areas as many others expressed.

Rumors of a Neverwinter mmo have been going for two years roughly and I admit I've been following along like a little fanboy! lol The announcement came today (or yesterday) of Neverwinter being worked on by Cryptic. Of course, alot of us knew that already but we've been hoping that positive karma would change that course. The link above is the official website that's up now.

Though I have no love loss for Cryptic there are a couple of things that should reassure old Neverwinter fans. It seems it won't be a traditional mmo; maybe a bit more in line with Bioware's servers in the old days. My old lady and I are devoted R.A. Salvatore fans so we're excited that a three part series is now being written by him and will be basically canon for the game. The first book to come at release though so I guess I'll have to qq a bit over that in the meant time.

Anyhow, while I'm not a full blown roleplayer I did enjoy that aspect in Neverwinter Nights and I will be praying to the "game gods" that Cryptic does not screw this one up. (though I don't know what Blizzard could do about it if they do screw it up.. haw haw haw) I'm sure Atari knows this is their last gasp for Neverwinter so hopefully it will be good.

In my Neverwinter life I was a dedicated Ranger and Cleric... no surprise I ended up with favorites as the Warrior Priest and White Lion in War eh?

While another game will never take the place of sledging a git's face I will be looking forward to writing another bit of history for a Cleric and Ranger and campaigning them into epic levels.

Anyone else out here with good Neverwinter memories?

No, definately not :) I started gaming ... well let's just say I was almost in jr high when D&D came out with their box set - you know the one with the yellow dice and black crayon to color in the numbers? haha The only part I don't still have is the crayon. D&D, Top Secret ... I started reading TRS books. When I found R.A. Salvatore (my first was The Halfling Gem) and Elaine Cunningham .. it was one book after another. And, I am still reading them today. Who can resist the glint off Twinkle and Icingdeath! TES: Arena... <3 I worked for a game company writing quests and doing area design for a few years. TES, Planescape, Diablo.. NWN... Alpha and Beta/Friends&Family testing for WoW (thanks to my former boss, "Thorne" from the job above). Fell in love with Asheron's Call and omg Patch Day! WoW was released.. played until WAR .. NWN as a type of MMO? My husband will never see me haha. I will be searching for a way back into Ched Nasad.. The ilk in Menzoberranzan think too highly of themselves, that shall always bring about changes in the higher houses.. but *shrug* it's amusing nevertheless. I keep checking on info off and on - hard to not drag out the english to drow dictionary on occasion. I am reallllly tempted to see how they want to attempt to put all this together - I mean the system is complex and which version of the rule set. Character creation.......... rolling forever to get the best stats possible.. omg Great times! ~Cheers!

Great to see another D&D face!:P I was actually introduced somewhat late.. and by then Neverwinter was in full swing so that was the route I took starting out. After getting into the game after a short while though I was intrigued enough to peruse the ruleset a bit to understand what was going on behind the scenes of the game. Fortunately the new Neverwinter will not be a true MMO. The are simply calling it an OMG.. online multiplayer game. So the server structure will be somewhat similar to the original Bioware servers. In addition there will be dungeon instances for parties and other parts of the world that you can make "private" to your group; in a sense creating your own unique instance. The character creation system from Champions Online will be in too. So I guess you'll be able to roll any race and make yourself look like Leonard Nimoy.:P That's fortunately the only thing similar to Champions though. lol It's going to be based on edition 4.0 too so I'll have some reading up to do prior to release. I think there is a taunt now in 4.0 along with other aggro functions.. definitely new but something different to look forward too. I am fortunate in that both myself and my fiance' are somewhat fanatical about the game. When it does come though she won't speak to me for a month I bet...lol But with the game out then.. ummm... won't care.;) Had a good time with TES too by the way.. very good depth. And then I had even more fun with it when it translated to Fallout3. Btw.. I was late to Salvatore as well... the Dark Elf Trilogy was the first read for both of us here and I don't think I was more than 5 pages in before I was hooked. We are gleefully waiting for the next round to hit. But from our reading history with him we are very partial to Drizzt, Guenhwyvar, Belwar, Bruenor, and Catti-brie. :) However, had Cadderly and Danica not stopped at the quintet I would probably say that's my favorite... a tough decision indeed. Some sites with info for you if you haven't seen them yet ;) http://www.rasalvatore.com/ Information on the first book coming out for Neverwinter..Gauntlgrym http://38studios.com/ This is another studio that Salvatore has been working with for awhile. They've had a new mmo in development for awhile that was codenamed Copernicus for a long time... still a ways out. But the game canon will be based on Salvatore's story direction. They also aquired Big Huge Games a ways back and they've been working on an rpg title that will familiarize players with the universe. The story for this is also overseen by Salvatore; it's his baby. :P http://www.massively.com/2010/08/23/massively-exclusive-jack-emmert-speaks-about-neverwinter-and-a/ a good Emmert interview http://www.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/neverwinter/news.html?sid=6274162&mode=previews&tag=topslot;thumb;1 another interview Anyways, good to meet another rolling a D20.:P It's a bit of a wait for the game but hopefully the book releases fill in some of the void! Until then? Lloth kyorl dos

Vendui' 4th ed ... wow hm interesting... and annoying. Time to dust it off - its one of those rule sets you just toss under the chair because you are more comfortable with the 'old' ways. haha. Ah the Cleric Quinet.. loved those books. Cadderly needs a new series. Dwarf doodads.. Pikel will always be one of my favorite characters. Yes, I shed a few tears when he lost his hand and could only look at the stump and say Ooooi. Gauntlgrym is coming this October! RASalvatore.com is taking reserves for signed/personalized copies of the newest book from R.A. Salvatore! - I need to get on the list for a reserve. This also just knocked a few poeple off the "need to figure out what to get for xmas" list - Thanks!! The Salvatore game .. the site is up - I cannot wait to devour thie new book in October. http://reckoningthegame.com I want to see some live action footage! I cringed when I saw EA with 38 and Big Huge... when I am excited about a new game, I always hold my breath and hope Turbine will pop up :( There was sooo much in AC I would love to see in a PvP related game. Ah back to my lab for a few more hours and may Lloth guard you, also - Aluve' Bre

interesting. I wish I knew what happened to my Basic and Advanced Edition box sets and all my modules. Far as I am concerned there is no edition after 2nd. I also played PnP Rolemaster which is the ruleset DAOC was supposed to be based on.

"Far as I am concerned there is no edition after 2nd." Agreed! Have you ever tried playing Arduin Grimoire by David Hargrave? It has random 100 tables for literally everything! The crit miss table - I love that thing ... thanks to that table, several characters who have graced my lands are now maimed, but, imho, with an entertaining tavern story to tell should anyone care to buy the miserable sod(s) a pint! The random wish gone bad chart.... if you can warp a wish into something so convoluted it spins them off on a 4 week side quest (real time and random side quest) - this has got to be my all time favorite of all the tables. It's like wrapping the Deck of Many around a Wand of Wonder and then sitting back as things go to the extreme. The Beastiary ... just bat-crazy insane monsters! kill kittens and a herd thunder bunnies were up there on my list of favorite things to throw at people new to the system. Ah.. good times, indeed!

Hm...I think i taw some TSR fanboys. I dit, i dit i taw some TSR fanboys. Well i was also playing dungeons and dragons since hm.. it was called 1st edition or simply D&D? quit it as soon as 3.5ed arrived and Hasbro took over WoTC. As for Salvatore, tho i like his writings, i simply hate him cause nowadays its hard to find an evil drow, not wielding 2 scimitars and not have a panther familiar. I'm sure if R.A ever mades it to Menzoberanzan all those poor LE, CE priestess and assasins will teach him a lesson for ruining their hard earned reputation. :) On the other hand i m a DragonLance fan, so i cant be nice for any writer except Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman :)
